Dylan got ahold of me through YouTube and we ended up setting a date for the Cove on the opener - June 17th.  The forecast that day was pretty bad, so we scrapped that and set our sites on the following Sunday - June 24th.  As our day approached the ocean had gone from nice early in the week to gale force winds and Small Craft Advisory for the weekend.  The Sunday forecast had gone from 5 to 15 knots with lots of left over wind slop from the previous days to 10 to 20 knots, gusts to 30, and the slop last night at Pt. Arena was 8 @ 8...  I was agonizing a bit over whether to cancel again, and the deciding factor was that Dylan was ready for a challenge.  At 6'6" and 190 pounds he's in good shape, and we'd corresponded enough to where I knew he has been out on Humboldt Bay several times on his Prowler.  Also, on my recommendation he'd scored a wetsuit, radio and fishfinder, so I knew that he was serious about getting in to the sport.  I feel fortunate for sure that I had in Dylan a really strong candidate for doing a day on rough water, because that's exactly what we got...

Pardon my language, but it was shitballs out there today!  We launched onto a very confused sea with super short period 3 to 4 foot wind waves and a stiff 6 to 8 knots of south wind in our faces.  We had the confidence of having quite a few other kayakers around - several of whom I didn't recognize and I was kind of shocked that there were noobs there launching into such a trashed ocean.  With a really strong SE to NW current taking us around the point and past the hotels super quick things got really challenging when fog descended on us about an hour and a half in.  I wondered how long we would last and I also knew that these kind of seas would test Dylan's assertion that he doesn't get seasick - this was definitely the kind of day that can turn even very salty boaters green.  I do a pretty careful job of assessing my guests' skills, balance and comfort level early in the trip - especially in marginal conditions.  Dylan was charging hard and feeling fine in the washing machine, so we made our way to familiar spots and chased the usual suspects.  He got us on the board early with a nice black and soon had a greenling to add to it, and I was stoked that we were finding some success in the chaos of the nasty water and persistent wind.

In the meantime, on the VHF...  The powerboat fleet that had scored nice kings earlier in the week right out front had quickly assessed and given up on quick salmon bites close to the Cove - they all headed south to the Hat and the Old Man.  Just like this past Monday though - when the fleet was only getting shakers and silvers south while the yakkers got all 30" and better fish - the Cove produced again today!  We saw Ryan King with a limit to 36" early, Kenny Baker and Kevin Knauff had some hogs, I heard Ed Johnson announce a nice fish, and we went on to get some nice Chinook as well - Dylan's first kayak caught king at 34", first lingcod and biggest blacks.

Ocean chilled some late, but 6 hours against that current had us pretty beat by just after 1PM when we called it.  My guy today got an indoctrination in paddling rough water.  He loved the challenge, had a strong performance, and he went home with about 30 pounds of boneless salmon, rockfish and lingcod filets that have him confident that his wife will let him go on another adventure soon!

Looking forward to another hookup, Dylan - thanks for supporting my gig.  :smt001

Success in crappy conditions for everyone it sounds like.  Couldnt ask for better results besides better conditions.  The bigger fish are moving in and ofcourse I'm out of town.  I would have been there if I wasn't out having a blast seeing great live music.

Good report. Congrats on a successful trip

Glad ur client got his fish!  Good initiation being out there in that slop.  Even when the weather let up the current was relentless. We bailed about 10:30 I think.   My big fish of the day was just under 36...taped out at a little over 35.25.  Gotta love Shelter Cove!

That's determination right there. I almost got sea sick just looking at the photos. Well done!
