Hello, currently own an ocean kayak frenzy and planning to jump to a hobie kayak.  The model im looking at is the hobie mirage sport since it's similar in size to the frenzy ( 9'7" and ~ 58 lbs) since i plan to carry it myself to various beaches.

I plan to ocean fish with it, any tips of anyone using this in the ocean or any concerns i should watch out for when buying this kayak?  Im looking to buy for ~$1200 for a used 2009 model.  Not sure if that's a good deal but that's my budget.  I believe it comes with just the standard fins.  Appreciate any feedback!

Get a beach cart so you won’t have to carry it. Then you can manage a bigger kayak. Affording it of course is a different matter.

My old one did very well at ARW and bay. However I never had a chance to take it out in the ocean before I upgraded.

You can find 2015 or newer sport with the new seat around $1500-$1700 used depending what's available. I bought a new 2008 from a guy who never used it for $850 when I first got into kayaking.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Go bigger, Outback or Revo.  The weight issue shouldn't be a problem since you'll be kayaking with a partner who could help you with loading and unloading . . . right?

^^^ This

+1

If you can afford a Revo or Outback, that's the way to go, IMHO. If you don't need the lawn chair style seat, you'll save a bundle by getting a 2014 or older. But I would not get a really old one, as there were some issues with cracks prior to about 2011 or so...
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

thanks for all the tips! super appreciate it.  ive been taking my frenzy in the ocean and its only 8 ft, albeit i dont go too far out.  also to be fair , the sport is only 5 inches from being 10 ft (if that makes any difference).  i have some other storage issues (dont live in a big home with a spacious backyard) so i need a smaller kayak to stow away.  otherwise the bigger hobies out there would have been my first choice.

A couple of years ago there was a guy I saw several times at Timber Cove with a Sport.
He seemed to do just fine and he was a bigger guy than me.

It may not track as well or be as fast as a Revo, but I wouldn't hesitate to ocean fish in a Sport.

Never right side up or upside down.  Is this real or am I dreaming.

thanks so much!  what do you guys think of the price @ $1200?  This is the link to the post:  https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/139649013571744

Probably dont need the sail so will most likely sell that for $50 or so.

It wouldn’t hurt to counter offer $1100.

I would be interested in the sale for $50 :)
