‘Challenging’ whisky tour launches in Scotland

A new adventure race has launched in Scotland, which challenges whisky fans to cycle, trek and kayak between 10 distilleries on Islay and Jura.

Participants will cycle, trek and kayak across the two Scottish islands

The Project: Tour of 10 Malts challenge takes whisky fans between the Scottish islands of Jura and Islay, where they will visit 10 distilleries – including Bowmore, Kilchoman and Jura.

Organised by UK firm Rat Race Adventure Sports, the multi-sport adventure is due to take place for the first time in July this year.

Rat Race founder Jim Mee said: “Project: Tour of 10 Malts is all about covering distance and joining the dots on the world’s most famous whisky islands.

“This exceptional package mixes trips to these historic landmarks with short trekking stages and serene sea kayaking in some of the most stunning landscapes Britain has to offer.”

The challenge will start on 13 July with a ferry to Islay, where participants will then complete a three-mile ride to the “big three” distilleries on the south of the island, before camping for the night.

In the morning, participants will cycle north on coastal and moorland roads, picking up their kayaks at the town of Bowmore, where they will then cross Loch Indaal to Bruichladdich. From there they will head through Port Charlotte and onto the Kilchoman distillery.

The following day, participants will return to their bikes for a 30 mile ride to Port Askaig, where they will switch back to kayaks to take a tea-time trip across the sound to Jura. After a 10 mile ride, participants will arrive at Craighouse for their final distillery visit and overnight camping.

On the final day, participants will cycle back to port, boarding a ferry back to the mainland.

Mee said: “This isn’t about getting sozzled. You’ll struggle to complete the journey if you’re nursing a hangover from the night before.

“But by utilising the distillery-to-distillery format you can make your way through one of the most picturesque and challenging landscapes the UK has to offer.”

Project: Tour of 10 Malts is priced at £449 per person and can also be arranged for private groups of at least six people.
