A man has been safely removed from flood waters in Spencer County thanks to an Indiana State Trooper.

According to ISP, Trooper Kaitlyn Greene was patrolling Orchard Road Tuesday afternoon near County Road 400 North when she was waived down by the wife of a kayaker.

Trooper Greene then saw the woman’s husband clinging to a metal culvert pipe. Apparently, the man’s kayak was swept through the culvert by the rushing water.

Trooper Greene said the man was barely able to keep his head and arms above the water when she grabbed her life jacket and water rescue throw back. Greene is a trained underwater search and rescue diver.

Greene was unsuccessful in giving the life jacket to the man. Next, she tried to secure a throw bag rope under the victim’s armpits and back. That technique worked. Two people driving by, stopped to help during the rescue.

One of the drivers attached the rope to the man and Trooper Greene pulled him to safety.

Greene treated the man at the scene for cold water exposure, according to ISP.

The man was treated and released by Spencer County EMS.

Greene suffered scratches to her right hand from the sharp irregular edge of the metal culvert.
