Bent another mast today
« on: February 24, 2018, 08:24:36 PM »
Second aluminum mast bent so far.  The first one bent when I landed on it during a wipe out (no bodily injuries, thankfully!) and the second one this morning while surfing low tide, shallow-ish conditions.  I had to ditch my board in front of an approaching wall of white water and it must've rolled over and hit bottom.

How are the carbon masts holding up?  I imagine they're similar in terms of stiffness (even stiffer/strong than aluminum?) but wouldn't deform like a long, thin aluminum extrusion.  Also much lighter.

I suspect you know what a klutz I am. All I can say is so far the GoFoil is Pono-proof.
Foote 10'4X34", SIC 17.5 V1 hollow and an EPS one in Hood River. Foote 9'0" x 31", L41 8'8", 18' Speedboard, etc. etc.

So we are back to Aluminum are we. What part of aluminum has ever really been good? It's like aluminum hang glider frames, bike frames, windsurfing booms, paddles, ski poles, etc. It's OK for R&D but once they pass that phase, it'll be a composite.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

I hadn't thought of that Tall Dude, you're right, it all does eventually get replaced with a composite.

MiSC-
Have you thought about fabbing something up, using alu on the ends to hook into the existing rig and a wood+carbon fiber+epoxy piece in the middle?

Jrandy, that's a great idea. Actually that's a good idea for ll these systems that use aluminum. Someone should make replacement masts out of carbon like that.
