Running Quad with a little stubbie?
« on: February 24, 2018, 11:56:44 AM »
Ok have played with different size quad sets after deciding I prefer quad over thruster with the majority of surf I ride is never bigger then just overhead.

Just saw a couple YouTube vids about adding a little stubbie to tighten it up just a tad without the over finned feel. So I cut down a plastic fin and going to give it a try, I'll prob cut the aft tab off to get it further back...

Anyone try this, thoughts?

I've been designing and manufacturing fins for decades and have been running a quad with a guitar pick StubNub on virtually all of my personal boards...
The trailer gives a bit more drive at no expense of increased drag...many of my clients who are not comfortable with quads...and, prefer a 2 + 1 option...usually end up preferring the quad plus trailer option once they actually try it...

IMO, they are most efficient when moved all the way aft towards the tail...which is why I build the majority of my boards with an adjustable center box option...we even get great nose rides with this setup...on my Jammers, I even move the center box further aft...

Always remember that your paddle is the biggest fin on your board...

It may be an optical thing in your pic...but, it looks to me that your rear sidebiters are too big...over-finned...and, that nubster is way too far forward...especially for smaller surf that you indicate...looks like a very draggy fin setup to me...when I see fins clustered too close together it looks like a cluster f*ck...YMMV...;-)

On my Sup Sports Hammer 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 liters, I sup surf with 5 fin (quad +1) setup. Works very well for me sup surfing the waves I find on the upper Texas coast. I use these 5 fin sizes on my Hammer: (2, 5"), (2, 4") and (1, 2.25").

I just received my new Sup Sports Hammer 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 liters and I'm going to use the exact same surf fin setup for this board as well when the water warms up to my comfort zone.
Blue Planet Duke: 10'5" x 32" x 4.5" @ 190 Liters (2 Dukes)
Sup Sports Hammer: 8'11" x 31" x 4" @ 140 Liters
SUP Sports One World: 11'1" x 30" x 4.5" @ 173 Liters
CJ Nelson Parallax: 9'3" x 23 1/2" x 3 3/16" @ 78.8 Liters (prone surfing longboard; Thunderbolt Technologies build in Red construction)

I run the same set up, quad plus a knubster and love it. Sorry, I do not have any pictures of it. Tried the regular thruster set up then quad and after adding the knubster fin and will not change back.

Thx for the thoughts, look fwd to riding it. I have gradually moved smaller with both fins from original quad fin set, what I'm running now in the pics is 5 1/4" GL-1 & 4 3/8" BI-7, the stub is 1 5/8", i cut the aft tab off to get it into the back plug.

Cheers
