My new ride!
« on: January 05, 2018, 06:21:06 PM »
Next in progression and loving it so far. First year was a Lahui Kai 12’6 x 26”, my first race board. Then went KM Compressor 14’ x 24” and now on the F-one 14’ x 23.5”. All very different boards and I’m glad where I ended up. The F-One is stable, fast and more of an all round race board. Budget says just one race board for now and feel this board will handle more conditions. It feels fast in the flats, handles chop and flies with anything pushing it from behind. 4lbs lighter than the KM and more stable even though narrower.  Actually both boards were more stable than the Lahui Kai at 26”. Looking forward to the upcoming race season!

Congrats on your new race board. Hope you can take it for a paddling session if the weather warms up.

Thanks for sharing the photo of her. She's pretty to look at.

Thanks guys, it really is a beautiful board. The finish and feel of it are night and day to my last couple of boards.  I got a chance to see them at Surf expo last year and was really impressed with the F-One boards. The KM was super fast in flat glassy water and  I was a bit concerned losing a little flat water speed going to a more “all water” shape but I am not noticing much difference. Can’t wait to try it in bumpier conditions which is where I have struggled in the past.

Here is a look at the two together. Both 14’ the F-One just 1/2” narrower at 23.5” . Completely different shapes. Will need a bit more time on it before I can give a more complete review. It’s been freezing in FL the last couple of days!

Nice comparison photo. I'm eager to read your comparison results when you get a chance to test them.
I'd be voting for the lower profile one as it looks to me like it might have a quieter glide on flat water...but ya never know until you try it.

The lower profile, more displacement board (KM) would be tough to beat I think by any board when it’s glassy calm. It glidded, didn’t lose speed between strokes and just felt plain fast. When it was perfectly calm. The F-One throws spray everywhere and is a bit slower in the glass but is more stable in the chop. I had a hard time last year at the starts of races when the water was chopped up an had maybe only one or two races where I could use the KM. I’m hoping the F-One will be a better all-round board since pretty much no race is glass and even though narrower is more stable. Picture is off some one mile splits I was doing just randomly, not really trying for time or pushing it hard but on flat water and you can see the KM (on the left) is a tad faster. However the F-one will blow it away as soon as the wind starts or there is any chop at all.

Little update since there have been a few race board posts lately. I have about 100 miles spread over racing, training, flatwater and ocean paddling on this board now. Although it’s called a flat water board, I would definitely call it more of an all water board. 23.5” wide is plenty stable and this thing will catch any tiny bump and really pick up speed. Still very happy with it and need to keep training harder to really see what this thing can do.

Got to see the F-one lineup last year which is why I decided to go with them. The look, fit and finish on all their products was beautiful. An “all around board” like this for me is the way to go. I’m mostly in flat, lake water and can get 10 min miles out of this board and I’m just an average joe/weekend warrior. Plenty more speed in the board if I can get better. I also finally have the stability I needed at starts and choppy water.

Definitely very nice looking. Put a recessed deck on it and I could start drooling.

Agreed, just a bit scooped out. I gotta drop a few lbs first! I would like the deck flatter though and scooping it out could do that. Having the deck slant inward slightly like it is now surely helps with my stability for sure but after a few hours is rough on my knees.

Quick update that I’m a few months in now on the board. One thing is for sure, F-One has a hell of a board here. I’ve not seen any shortcomings on this board now I’ve gotten comfortable with it and like it even more after demoing a few others. It truly is a do it all board. Knowing where to stand helps a ton! Just a inch or two forward or back makes a HUGE difference! “Trimming” the board has given me noticeable gains whether upwind, downwind, drafting etc. Trying to optimize that is what I’ll now continue to work on. Still looks brand new, construction is top notch

Interesting. What "trims" do you use in what situations? I.e., when are you most forward, most backward, etc?

I'd love to see a video comparison of your 2 boards on FLAT water.
