Authorities continue to search for a missing man whose kayak overturned on the Wallkill River earlier this week.

State police say a call for an overturned kayak on the river in Rifton came in around 3 p.m. Tuesday. Troopers say the State Police Underwater Recovery Team responded with an airboat, divers, and SONAR equipment; Ulster County's Emergency Management and Sheriff's offices; and multiple local fire and police departments. But the icy waters, combined with spring-like weather, mean investigators can't send a dive team again without risking other lives.

"The large chunks of ice and the strong current is a big risk for divers to go in right now," said Rifton Fire Assistant Chief Ryan Auchmoody. "Until it clears up a little bit more and the ice melts and the current slows down, it's really unsafe to send anybody diving in there."

Officials say they have identified the missing man, but are not releasing his name at this time at the family's request. So far, the kayak and the man's belongings have been found. State Police say they do not believe the man was wearing a life vest.
