Now there were definitely plenty of thoughts put in the design. Looks like custom should pay off handsomely.
I am really started to get interested in the different shapes of the clogs that are coming out post-Ace for a flat-water, light wind board too.
The One Storm has also some double-concave I believe but with a large nose and rocker, and I received these photos of the Deep Velocity (starting to dig that board) from the US distributor capobeachboy in this forum.
Looking at the bottom shape with a teardrop concave, the "low" rocker and how much the nose is pulled-in.
My poor Velocity has been a little neglected since the arrival of the unlimited. Because they cover similar conditions I may be forced to move her on. I love the Velocity as well but I need something to cover the gaps in the quiver a little better.
Send it to Canada to a good home 😇

I'm due for a trip back to the motherland, although I do prefer the weather here. I was born in Vancouver. Not sure if could squeeze it in the luggage tho.  ;)

Darn, that would be great...hit me when you are back for a paddle in Howe Sound if you are interested.

Rudder is a little larger than the dagger style and is a slimmer version of the racing ski rudder. It is in the same placement ratio as shorter unlimiteds.

Hey mate, got a pic of that rudder? i don't know if i like mine and would be interested in changing.

I mean, i could wait until next time i see you.... but, loch ness and all that...

it looks like this is a more optimized nose than i've seen on other clogs. much
narrower shoulders and lower volume on the first foot. Seems really smooth.

I believe that designs are been refined and that there is clog and clog....
That is why I am considering getting a clog for flatter conditions.

As much as I like this concept, it looks too limiting and confine you to certain conditions.
Many times wind pickup from no where and if it's not playing ball you're in for some pain,
You may have experienced it with your Age GT? How is that differs in your mind?

A custom sure does offers so much more bang for your back as you design something perfect
for your conditions and your size. It seem like you've been through quite a few boards, if you were
to go with a custom, would you go for a quiver killer or a very specific design?

It looks like crazybula knows exactly what he wants and seem to be right on the money with his design.
in progress...

I paddle mostly in large bay, sounds and inlets where the wind/current do not get to catastrophic levels without warnings but where it is rare to have a flat day.
So the under 20 knots conditions, steep confused chop are the bread and butter
It is very different than both the East coast and SoCal.
The Ace GT is the most versatile of my boards and if I had to keep only one it would be it.
That said, I could benefit from a more refined design for lighter conditions while still having the ability to take on vicious side chop.
There is also days that you cannot shuttle such a large board or when you just feel like going "light".

At this stage for me, a minimum quiver without UL would be:
  • Sunova Allwater Blue or Deep Velocity or One Evo Dugout for flat/light (lower rocker, pullin nose, concave bottom of some sort)
  • Bark Vapor bigger conditions/stronger winds downwind/shuttle
If I could get the above in 16' instead of 14' all the better.

The Ace-GT I would keep on top for touring and distance and some downwind - it should cover most eventuality in my case.

If only you'd be closer... I think I have just the board for you ;)
an unlimited that does it all well yet handles like an all-around 14"

Yes having the ability to get a custom board nearby is a good thing.....our boards need to come in a container among many others :-)

Lately I am also starting to consider a big factor - what board are available locally rather than in absolute.
The greatest board far away that you cannot try and that will cost bundle to ship and import on its own, is not really a valid proposition.
We are somewhat lucky to have here in Vancouver the One sup distributor and soon the Sunova distributor, still missing a Deep and NSP and we would have Oz at our doorstep :-)
Infinity has a new Canadian distributor but back East so 5,000 km away. Not sure how this will pan out if at all for us here.

I forgot to mention the bottom shape. Like most clogs it is based on rolled rails and very slightly rolled bottom, but within the roll we introduced a slight double concave which draws out to a panel V exit tail. The rails do harden in the back third.
The idea was to still have the sub-planing performance of a normal dugout but also achieve the turbo feel of a double when the pace goes up.
Seems to work so far. The only thing holding it back is the motor.
This kinda sounds like the Bullet 14 underside solution except rolled vs surf nose.  Having taken both the fixed and rudder versions DW can say that design easily planes.  Almost too much and too fast.  But that is on a 14.  Not sure but would think based on my use with the Bullet 17.4 it would be hard to plane on a 19.  But no doubt that 19 should slip and slide like crazy.

But would keep your Velocity for AW use and going upwind and when you want a smaller faster turning board.  For us multiple boards is the right solution.  Do not think we would ever be ok with only one board choice.

The term 'plane' is not necessarily the over-all determining factor in what makes a board faster. On a big wave, my 10' x 29 performer is an absolute rocket. As soon as that wave energy stops ( I kick out), the boards sinks a little and I grind out strokes to beat the on coming waves. At that point it's a complete dog, stuck in the water with my 240 lbs. 'Glide' is what makes you faster in the long run. A 12'6 will start and stop with each bump. A 14' will glide a little more after dropping off a 'Plane' if you will. An unlimited doesn't need to 'Plane', it just takes the energy from the bump and glides. It doesn't slow that much and connects with the next 'Glide'. You reduce the 'plane then stop' effect by having a longer hull, and that maintains momentum.... which will carry you faster to the end.
It's not overhead to me!

Yeah that has been my sense as well ever since using the Bullet 17.4 years ago.  My take is that the 14s can unstick a lot faster because of less wetted surface.  Is kinda scary sometimes as you go so fast it is hard to slow down.  But found to just let the board settle back in the water by itself by not paddling.  I hardly ever brace like many talk about.  I am pulling full power to keep speed up to get the bumps ahead.  But am the size of Kai so not much weight to slow me down.

Have mentioned many times the 17.4 glides like crazy.  Overall speed is way faster than 14s on DW runs.  Super stable and the rudder is so easy to position the board wherever you want.  Do not understand how some can say to not use a rudder on that type board.  In my mind it is mandatory.  But to each their own.

If the conditions are mostly flat and not swell or wind driven, you don't need a rudder. Just foot steering is enough. A ventral fin is very helpful in quartered wind conditions. D'winding a rudder is a must for an unlimited.

Yeah was only talking about DW.  Have no experience with UL for flat and such.  Without a rudder that Bullet is near impossible to handle in a side wind or upwind.  I know firsthand.  Sidewind had max rudder and could barely hold a line.  Upwind could barely make any headway.  In the pic I was sitting in a protected cove.  Just to the left in open water the wind and waves were blasting full whitecaps.

Here's one we did a couple of days ago. Note the SIC has a fixed fin - that should get the tongues wagging  ;D ??? 8)

Yes it is very clear that both the SIC and the Ace-GT without rudder have terrible issues catching bumps... :-)
You board seems to be doing nicely and it does not slow down at all the few times some water went over the nose.
