His movie, "The Endless Summer" in 1963, got me involved into surfing when I was just 13 years old.

I loved 'On Any Sunday'. It was my era of dirt biking. It brings back memories of the Bultaco's, Hodoka's, Montesa's, and my first Yamaha mini enduro 60. Bruce filmed the BMX parts and some other scenes of 'On Any Sunday' right near my house. I remember all my friends and I watching the movie together. A whole bunch of Capo Beach guys are in it. Legendary glasser Danny Brawner was in a silly motorcycle scene where he's teaching a guy to ride on my street. Danny was also the drummer for the Sandal's which was some of the surf music used in the movie 'Endless Summer'.
Here is a photo from our Desert hideaway in Anza Borego and some classic dirt bikes. Same era. That's my older brother in the picture.

The opening credits of "On Any Sunday", with kids (including maybe TallDude? : ) riding their bikes (pedal) is just brilliant filmmaking... or maybe I'm just sentimental as hell about those days.

At the time I was tweener on an Air Force Base, where the age to ride a motorcycle was 12... heaven reached at age 12...

On any Sunday is my favorite motorcycle flick of all time. I remember going to the showing in LA with a few of my bike friends when it first came out. Bruce Brown and Mert Lawill came on stage to introduce the film. Great fun. I got stopped by a cop when we left for doing a wheelie in the parking lot. He let me go with a warning since it wasn't on the street.

At the time I was the service manager for Wheels of Fortune Yamaha in Carson. Most weekends a bunch of us would go to the desert to race or ride. Malcolm Smith came with us a few times. He rode rings around us without showing off in the slightest. I still have the Molly striped Yamaha 360 MX that I rode then. It needs to be restored and ridden. A project for this summer, perhaps.

Good days.

I had just moved there right after they were filming it so I missed being in it by a few weeks. Everyone of the kids in the BMX part I was friends with. Some still live in the area.

Thank you Bruce, for doing what you did so well...
and in the process, gave us all a dream to chase for all these wonderful years of following the surf and sun!

You are a very special memory now, that will forever live in our hearts.
Peace to you Bruce Brown.

I nominate Bruce Brown for a lifetime achievement Oscar for documentaries. No no one else has done what he has done or had as much fun doing it.

Talldude, Have you seen Endless Summer Revisited? His son Dana explains a lot about how Endless Summer was filmed, promoted, and its effect on surfing. It was especially interesting how that scene was film.
