Wingnut on SUP?
« on: December 10, 2017, 04:03:31 PM »
Came back in from Sharks to Privates today.  It looked like Wingnut at Privates doing SUP and he seemed to be enjoying himself.

I was in my cold weather gear/helmet, and he was wearing board shorts like it was just another day in Maui.

Gutsy.  The Dark Side making another conquest? Unless it was an evil Wingnut doppelganger.

Hmm, I'd only ever seen him on prone longboards that I can remember.

I Figured he would not want to be seen in town on one.

Tom beat me to it, but yes, he's been SUP surfing for a long time. Probably just not in his local, local. He is of course very good at it.

Wingnut is good at anything he does. He was one of the original stand up guys paddling around the L41 ten years ago.

Everybody knows what a gifted longboarder he is, but what you might not know is that he is an incredible bodysurfer.

Since he doesn’t use a leash, every once in a while he has to swim in for his board. I’ve seen him take off in broken white water and plane all the way to the beach. He uses the both arms by his side style and can bodysurf in on almost anything, even the most gutless white water. It’s amazing that he can coast through the flats, totally planing with speed, with no swim fins.

I grew up at Venice Beach.  Learned to swim in the lifeguard program.  Started bodysurfing at around six.  What Wingnut is doing is not hard.  With you're arms at you're side I think you create a little bubble under you.  I still do that bodysurfing and get compliments all the time.  Not bad for an old fart.

But yeah he's been at the forefront the longboard resurgence since the mid 80's and became a genuine surf star due to his appearance on Endless Summer II.  in 1997 he was diagnosed with MS and sort of dropped off the radar.  Good to see he is still active.

Silly me not knowing he was a SUP proponent.

"It's a three minute lesson."

Heh, Heh, makes me feel a bit retarded since it took 10 months of practice in the Harbor, four months  on the ocean before standing up on a wave, two months learning to do a simple step back, and well over a year more to learn how to turn, trim and step the rails. I guess I am a three minute sensation after five years.

I think he's talking about flat water paddling.

####I think he's talking about flat water paddling.

I know, I'm joking.

It's just funny when experts who have been doing things for years talk about "easy".  It's an entirely different frame of reference for beginners.
