14 Infinity wide aquatic
« on: December 11, 2017, 03:36:31 PM »
I just put a deposit on a 14' Infinity wide aquatic today. Im really torn between the 12'6 and 14'. The reason I put the deposit on the 14 was because it is the last one until April and they are all 30% off right now. I have until the weekend to make up my mind. Any thoughts?.........FYI this board will be a fitness board down the the Harbor in Dana Point.

Hey
I had to look this up b/c I thought the Wide Aquatic was a shorter all-around shape series, but I see Infinity now has this Wide Aquatic "Tour".

12'6 at 30" wide and 297L
14' at 30" wide and 318L

As between them, the 14 would be faster and nicer overall on open water.

There are Zoners who would question whether you need something this wide and voluminous.

And if its on the heavy side, it might feel sluggish, especially after you've gotten used to it.  Tho' that would add to the fitness aspect!

But if its light or a middle weight, you could just go out and enjoy.
Infinity makes good boards for sure.

Fairly comprehensive review for the the aquatic by Norm Hann. Looks like a good board, and Norm is well under 200 pounds and stated the Aquatic performed well without a load. The best way to know if a board will have too much volume is to get out on it. Not always an option, but you can't always go by specs either. One of my boards is 14 x 26 with just over 300 litres, and a 170 pound paddler tried it out and it wasn't corked out at all. Very stable for his weight. I will definitely be getting another touring board in the 30" wide range. The width is very much appreciated when you have a load and it's rough out, and it's nice to just know the stability is there at all times.

Not sure how much it weighs though. It's a little bit annoying when weights aren't published.

I think that Norm said that it was lighter than the Boardworks Great Bear and felt "light" on the water.

Great board to get out and do some serious miles on. Don't worry about the racing side of paddling, just enjoy being on the water.
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Best way to decide is to try both before you buy... 14’ers seem to be better for the +200 pound group. 14’ glide better, but it is easier to turn a 12/6.

If it's a fitness board, don't overthink it. If it inspires you to get out on the water, then it's a good board.  I paddle 5 or 6 days/week and use both a 14 and a 12'6, both flatwater boards. I sometimes go out on a 10'6 surf shaped board on really narrow rivers and creeks and am always surprised at how much fun it is. The board that gets you out the most is the best board you can buy.

Get the 14', you'll get better glide. Pm me if you ever want to venture out of the harbor in to open ocean. It helps to know where the outer buoys are, because they are not visible from the shore or harbor mouth. You have to paddle 1/2 a mile or so straight out into the ocean before they come into view. The buoys give me a perfect half way turning point for a 5 or 6 mile daily paddle. You'll see lots of whales too. There's a large group of local Zoners here in the San Clemente / Dana Point area.
Some other local deals on more touring width race boards to consider. 27" and wider 'Race' boards are more touring than racing.

Thanks I may take you up on that. I am a total newbie so guess I gotta get my sea legs first. Do you paddle surf as well?
