I finally got a chance to try sailing my new AI in the ocean this past Saturday. The entirety of my prior sailing experience was a brief outing with the kids in Pillar Point Harbor, plus an hour or so in an El Toro when I was a teenager.

I had an uneventful launch through the small surf in light offshore winds. The wind started to fill in some as I got out near the small point, and the boat started moving along nicely.

As I approached Pedro Point things started to get a little crazy, even reefed to half sail.

I had planned to go all the way down to Devil's Slide, but given the conditions, my unfamiliarity with the boat, and the likelihood of a headwind on the return journey I decided to turn around and stay in the Linda Mar area.

I spend the next few hours sailing back and forth between Rockaway and Linda Mar. I dropped a few crab traps and did a little fishing, but didn't catch anything worth bringing home.

The wind patterns were fascinating: close to the bluffs off Rockaway it was almost dead calm, while at the south end of Linda Mar cove the wind was ripping.

All in all, it was a fun outing. I'm still getting used to setting up and managing all the bits and pieces of an AI, and I have a fair amount of rigging to do before I have it properly set up for fishing.

Let me know if you want to go sailing some time!

Thanks for sharing! I surfed there a bit when younger. It seems like a good place and perfect day for a maiden voyage. It must have been thrilling.

Nice! Looks like it was getting intense in that second video.

Just curious as to what year model that is---never seen a shiny front crossbar like that...

Thanks, everyone!

It is a 2010. It has the silver crossbar because it's a special limited edition. Specifically, the all-the-black-paint-has-weathered-off edition.  :smt002

The 2015 and newer AIs have a sail of 65ft^2. This one is slightly smaller, I believe.

Maybe I will see you out there sometime. Nice video very inspiring. I setup my revo for sailing in October and brought it to pillar point for a test ride and made a few adjustments and the water was flat and zero wind that day and peddled back in. Haven't been crabbing this year and looks like it might be good this weekend. Traps and bait have been ready for a while.
