Tips for Big Guys?
« on: November 16, 2017, 05:05:53 PM »
Okay, I'm 230 lbs and I want to start foiling. What is a good foil for a guy my size? Is there anything on the market or am I up a creek?

I haven't started yet but I ordered a custom L41 board for foiling (which also doubles as a SUS board) because i didn't know if any of the off the rack stuff was going to be the right size. Im 275 so bigger then you. Gofoil has some bigger wings that have come out (but not yet on their site) the maliko 200 and maliko 280. Slingshot has an h4 wing... there seems to be equipment out there. Im now waiting for the board to be done and some more reviews to be up on the wings, but the short answer is I think there is gear out there to make it happen.

Check the videos from Houston Kiteboarding on YouTube. They just did a deep dive on the Slingshots. They have a couple of big ones as was mentioned.

I'm 210 and using the old Maliko GoFoil.  I haven't ridden any other foil, but I get plenty of lift and I would be really surprised if it wouldn't easily support 230-250 pounds.  If I get going at any reasonable speed, I have to forward weight it to keep it down.

GoFoil just released a lot more wing sizes. The new M-200 makes the Maliko look small.

Figure out how to mount that to the Slingshot foil SUP and I’ll bet anyone in the big boy club flies like one of the kids in the videos.  The Slingshot SUP is hilarious looking. 4” thick tail, flat rocker. But for the right guy, might be just right.

Hi,

I have the original Maliko and I weigh around 200.  Lift has never been a problem in the surf, it's exactly the opposite in that I often lift to much and the front wing comes up out of the water.  DW is another story and I'm hoping a bigger foil will work better.

FYI - go foil wings are fitted at the factory and not interchangeable with other go foil mast/fus.  So I suggest getting all the different wings they make or finding a brand that has interchangeable wings.  I want different wing sizes but I have sell my foil and buy a new one to do so.
Aloha, I welcome and appreciate all responses of positivity and good feeling.

Just email Alex and say "I'll have one of everything."

I've got an old Sim style SUP that should be fin for me: 7.0x30 120L. Mostly interested in surfing tiny waves for now. I'd really to give this a shot with laying out 3 grand on different foils trying to make things work.

As with most foiling Banter it is largely theory with little experience.  I had heard the same rumor.

Recently I borrowed another person's Maliko.  I tested the theory that my Kai foil would NOT fit on his Maliko mast.

Well . . . . . They Both Fit on the Same Fuselage.   In fact his Maliko was a touch lose, and required a thin piece of tape to tighten it up.  My Kai foil fit much more snug.

Well that's good news, thanks for sharing.  I wasn't spreading rumor, I emailed the Aguera's last month and asked to buy another set of wings.  They told me my only option was to sell my foil and buy a new one with multiple sets of wings.  Maybe someone will start making knock off wings?  I don't see wings listed separately on the gofoil website, so unsure how I would get another set?

I hear you.  I was thinking of contacting clearwater and see if they want to make some wood wing kits.  I like your DIY idea better.  :)

Clay, from what I can see, there's not a lot of tech behind Clearwater. (No dis there, he's just not really seeming to be into the science of foiling.) also what U.K. Has done with the anhedral from sections of a straight wing is where I eventually want to go.

The wing connection will be the part that will challenge but 3D scanning and printing is an option or just a good old fashioned plastic bag and a mold would be you there too.

it should be relatively easy to make a new wing to fit the go foil as the tapper will allow you to pot your new wing directly onto the fuz due to the taper and as long as you apply generous amounts of release wax and pva release agent it should pop straight off and with your maliko to use for reference you shouldn't have any problems with getting a good shape.

There is also a Maliko 240 or 280...I can't remember exactly.  It is massive!  Saw Brett Lickle on it this weekend.  He was flying all over and he is probably your size.
