Any suggestions?

I have 2 Abu Garcia backup reels: 6600BCX (practically new); and 6500 C3.  I tried to oil/grease the reels, and they no longer feel the same- not smooth. They work, but it "feels" shitty, not buttery smooth (excuse the technical jargon here  :smt003).  I'm guessing I didn't put it back together in the exact same order, or something like that.  I should have known better, since I'm not mechanically handy.  For me to service either reel (with shipping round trip) it would cost the same (or more) as buying another used one on Ebay.

What's my best option?  I would even be willing to give it to someone who can service it and give it to a kid or something.  Give me some ideas.

Jonathan

What is the cost of replacing? Alan Tani can probably fix them for you.

Hey Howard.  Alan serviced 2 of my other reels, also replacing with better carbon washers- awesome job and even more awesome guy.

As for the cost of replacing, the 6500 C3 used would probably cost $40, and the 6600BCX used about $25-35.  the cost of replacing would be cheaper than servicing.  Maybe I can give them to Alan, he can fix, and give it to some kids...

There is a great video on you tube showing how to dismantle , clean , and reassemble.
 Very easy.
I had several old Garcia reels that I was able to put back on line thanks to that video.

What are the symptoms? Sometimes you can figure it out by process of elimination. If it feels like grinding while turning the handle w/spool engaged, then perhaps the drag washers weren't put back on correctly (this is exactly what happened to my old 6500 c3).

I serviced Abu reels a number of times.
Took them apart, down to every nuts, screws, springs. Cleaned everything, lube up properly.
Put all parts back together, tighten nuts and screws properly. Took almost 3 hours for each reel.
It's more about doing what you love, fixing it for profit does not sound good.

If you can get it to me, I'll go through it for you.
I have over 10 years as reel technician under my belt ( before sales and management) at Fisherman's Warehouse.

Hi Chet.  I think you misread the OP.  My point was for someone to service it and give it to some kids, and asking for other options.  Not looking to fix it for profit.  It's cool that you do it out of love.  I, unfortunately do not have that skill, as I found out the hard way.   :smt003

Pat, that may very well be the case.  I did watch some Youtube videos beforehand, but guess I'm not a very good student.

thanks Eric for your kindness always.  Know of kids or some program that the reels can be donated to afterwards?  BTW, I pass Modesto a few days per week, and I think of you everytime I go into FW, although not the correct location.  :smt003 Go there every week to buy something b/c I ain't catching...

Well, THAT cat's outta the bag!  You kept it on the down low for what, 10 yrs?

I predict a line of NCKA's trudging ant-like over the hill to Shelter Cove, all bearing Abu's.  You must be getting lonely, and I have a question for you on how to fix my 6500.  yukyuk!!

I don't think I explained myself well. I "unintentionally" said the labor is huge that's why they charge quite a bit to service the reel even though the value of the reel itself is not much.
