Board to complement the Vapor
« on: October 18, 2017, 06:04:08 PM »
Hola. Time to think about a new board. Paddle Morro Bay inside, cruise the Morro and Avila coast when the wind and swell permits, and the accasional race. Love the offshore stuu the mosat. Looking for a board that's a little more challenging, and hopefull quicker, than my 14' Vapor. Looking hard at the Sunova 14x25.5 Allround. Wish I coiuld get a ride on one but don't feel like flying to Hood River. Any other vessels that could get the nod? The AllStar is probably the obvious choice. Am 5'10", 175#, and 51. Cheers.

Anything closer to a flat water board should be a nice complement for flatter days. Whiplash, 404 V3 or going with one of the ocean dugouts Ace, Storm, or flat water dugout Whiplash dugout, Evo dugout......to have a slightly different feel and definitely more of a challenge.

The sunova isn't different enough in purpose to the vapor that you'd want both. If you're looking for challenge out of another board then maybe go with a 24" flatwater shape. I regularly switch between a whiplash and a vapor.

Yeah the dugout designs have caught my eye as well. Just can't tell if they are for real or just a gimmick of the moment. Also, my concern with the flatwater boards are how will they perform offshore? Most paddles have me going outside the Mouth of Morro Bay and into open ocean where wind usually creeps up and the water is COLD. Or am I getting caught up with the word "flatwater" meaning only flatwater? Or am I getting caught up in paralysis by analysis (like that Jets fumble against the Patiots wtf???) But I digress. Cheers.

If you are looking for a perfect board for these kind of conditions, you already have it.
If you want another board for open conditions but more "technical" and that will challenge you more then a dugout is a good candidate. They are most definitely for "real" as they can be some of the fastest board in open conditions but more challenging to ride in anything 25 and narrower.

I ride the whiplash in the ocean all the time. Conditions dictate which of my boards I choose. The vapor is overkill on flatter days, the whiplash isn't suited for rougher, the sidewinder is somewhere in between. A narrower all around like a 24ish all star, blackfish, maliko etc. will be faster and less stable than a vapor while not being quite as limited as a real flatwater board. A flatwater board is just nice because on those calm days where they work they're simply more enjoyable to paddle.

Sunova might also make that all around in a narrower than 25" version. I didn't particularly care much for that board though. It might be faster than a vapor in flat water but I am not confident it's by much if it is at all, otherwise I prefer pretty much everything else about the vapor.

Yes the only issue that can hold you back is if you go for longer paddle wondering if the conditions will change to a point that riding the Whiplash (or anything similar) will make it not enjoyable at all i.e. I typically paddle in places where I can find myself separated from my launch point by several km of side-chop, side-wind that were not anticipated at the start or when I loaded my board on my car.
If I am conservative and the conditions stay good, I regret not having taken the more efficient board for flat.
If I am adventurous and conditions go bad, I swear the whole way and double if I get wet...:-)

So an all-around race board as suggested by Warmuth makes a lot of sense as it will hedge your bet against the extreme. The Vapor is still a great board to downwind and in rough side-chop to complement a racier all-around board.

Excellent!. Good point about distance as I prefer to paddle for 7-9 miles, which can get dicey when cruising the coast and fatigue creeps in. Also, sounds like a true flatwater board would be of limited use for me. Now to decide on a 24" ocean rig or maybe a even a dugout. Stoked for all your replies.

Love Morro Bay. My wife and I try to get down there for a week of vacation once every other year. Last time we were there I had my 14 Dominator with me and really enjoyed it in the Bay. I played around near the mouth alot,  but never went "outside"......just had fun catching some swells coming in through the channel.  Got spooked a few times by very large sea lions that were checking me out. I was a little worried about Great Whites at the time too. But we sure love that area for paddling.
Plan on taking new 14 x 27 Red Paddle Race on our next trip. Tired of worrying about travel dings on these trips.

Check out the allwater category of raceboards. In 24” Naish Maliko, Focus Bluefin, One Evo, Infinity Blackfish, 404 V3 or LTD are all stable allround shapes also built for go fast. Like the Allstar.

404 and Blackfish are near you, no? You should be able to try.

Focus Bluefin was the early kid on the block and a nice board but a bit heavy by todays standards for a gofast board. 404 is nicely light, as is One Evo. Allstar and Maish Maliko you pay a premium for.

I'll echo yugi on allwater race category, specifically the Naish Maliko 14x24 which seems to fall within your
size range and could be challenging as well in certain conditions.

Here is the thing though, if you're willing to pay premium for a boards like the Naish and Starboard, you might
want to consider a custom board.

You'll really be able to get a board very different from your Vapor but still something that check all the boxes
for you. Up until now I have 3 custom boards made for the same area I paddle in, but all very different and fulfill
different needs. With custom you're also not limited to a size so you could go with a 16', surly a different experience.

Funny enough, the board you're thinking sounds very similar to my next upcoming board and I'm about your size :)

Sounds like you might be ok with many options.  So you may get analysis paralysis without trying all these boards firsthand.  If that happens -> would be worth it to fly up to Hood and try to sort them.  Pretty much each of those boards has its own specific set of pros and cons based on your skills and how you personally cope in certain conditions.  But sounds like you might already have your answer.

Nice Burkas. In fact a 14' x24" allwater race board and a sleek 16' fixie DWer would be my ideal perfect quiver of 2.

[edit to add] are those Supuk's trademark grooves I recognize?

Yes, it's a combination of the two that I'm trying to achieve in this board. Could be setup as fixie, but this too has 4
fins with ventral rudder.

And yes, I blatantly copied supuk grooves. Thank you supuk for the groovy grooves :D

you doing the shape yourself?

I always thought those grooves were so your beer cans don't roll off. But I realize it's so you save 23 g. I'd have to stop drinking beer to justify 23g off.
