HELP. I need to spend money on a new board!
« on: October 18, 2017, 02:38:58 PM »
ugggh.  money...burning....hole....in pocket!

So I have been through about 2 years of 'renting' boards by buying and selling (usually at a loss) to try to find a true two board quiver.  My skills have improved.  I have made peace with the scale.  (im going to die at 200-215 and that 190 Lb football playing weight isnt coming back...) My Overhead board will stay at a 9'1 Super Tech- but I need a new daily driver for Knee to chest thumpy NJ beachbreak.

I'm currently at the 'whats going on in the garage?' level quantity of boards according to my wife and need to thin the herd.

This forum has given me so much- I try to give back by posting my experiences on boards- because lets face it- this poop is expensive and many of us cant demo before we by.

I now know that a 8'3-8'6 29.5-30.5  shortboard shape is really what I am after in the 117-121L range.  A little full nose and a little full tail dont bother me- that took a long time of long 28in wide boards to figure out.

my favorite shape so far has been the 8'2 x 31 x 119l el Tigre wide.  If this board had 2-3 more inches of length and -1in of width i think i'd have my winner.

Problem.  I haven't found that board out there. Im hesitating to go custom as a traditional construction will fail on me at some point.  So far Starboard Carbon and Sunova XXX have be the only real boards that I havent had issues with.

here are the boards I need to thin out:

8'11  x 28 Infinity TL - (Too Long)
7'4 x 30 x 106l Hypernut (sooo fun- but always have the wrong waves for it)
8'2 x 31 El Tigre (Ill own this forever since it is basically one big repair...but it cant be my daily driver anymore)

SO....what are y'alls thoughts?  I'm ready to post up a big trade / sale on the classified and on Distressed mullet- but would love the hear what I should be riding.

Love the "renting boards"... at least you're not hooked on Ferraris...

How about having Sunova build you a longer and wider El Tigre, and toss them a Blue Planet handle to install if you're not a LiftSup fan?

Have fun!

Dusk patrol! You definitely read my posts!!! Pretty much a perfect solution but trying to see if there is a production solution out there I may just me missing. Or better yet a nice used solution for 'rent'

Jerz....with how dialed you are into what you like and are looking for, and with how much you appreciate board design, I can't recommend my shaper (Kronos) enough. He'd work really closely with you to figure out exactly the shape & dims you'd want (based on your goals, skill, breaks, etc).  His new full carbon build (with micro-bubbles in the hot coat) is pretty solid and the boards are super light (you have to feel them to believe it).  If you'd like more info, I can email some details (including some sample pics of some of this different shapes that he's made for people I know).  I'm not affiliated with him at all....just a huge fan.

Thanks SA. Definitely pm me. I follow him on Instagram (because of you) but his digital footprint is pretty light. So interested in learning more.

Was praying the perfect  used board is out there but haven't yet even found something comparable new....

ha ha.... SA, natural that we would both show up thinking the same, since our shapes share similar pedigree  ;D

NJz...
Warning!
I am 100% totally affiliated.
In fact, my name is on the board I have in mind  ;D ;D

I looked at your wish list and the Sunova 8'7 "Creek" comes pretty darn close to what you requested.
One inch longer, perfect width and only 4 liters under your low limit.

Not bad for a ready made production board, and.... in Sunova XXX construction!
The 4 liters less may combine with your low width limit to give you some hesitation, but worth a look.

I made a mock-up showing your 8'2 and the 8'7 Creek.
Then I laid the 8'7 Creek over your 8'2 to show how the width compares between the different sizes.

the Creeks are JUST hitting buyers this week, so I am stoked to hear feedback.
I am amazed by my 9'4, even though it's on the big side (I designed it for winter)
This board surfs like a much smaller board.
It handled everything the Maria dished out in RI and was a blast in summer fun waves.

I will get to paddle an 8'10 Creek within the next two weeks, so I'll have a good idea then, how the stability is at MY lower limit (125 L)

Jerz, if I am near your neighborhood soon, I'll give you a shout and let you demo my big 9'4.
James Casey ordered one (7'7) after riding my 9'4 for two days at a "Waterman's Weekend"
(pic #2) James shredding my 9'4

"Mauka Lodge Paddlesurf Retreat" in Portugal, just got two Creeks last week.
Here's a vid of Tiago unboxing a beautiful custom color, Lime Green 7'10!

It sounds like you know exactly what you want.  I doubt you'll find an off the shelf board that checks all the boxes for you.  Did you check out the Infinity RNB production boards?  The 8-2 x 30 has 125L.  Very expensive though.

If you can find a local shaper you can save a lot over a good production board.  When I first went this route I cut my board cost by $800.    If you are worried about durability beef up the glassing schedule or add some CI Max Ply CI 4040 or Hex Weave (see photos below).

Here's a couple of shapes for you to consider if you do go custom.

Mayhem Quiver Killer:  8-4 x 30 x 4 x 115L
Slater Designs Omni: 8-4 x 30 x 118L
Home Break: Doheny
Tic Tac v3 (Hoglet): 6' 6" x 23" x 3.6" x 67L
Omni: 6' 9" x 23" x 3.75" x 68L
Tic Tac (OG): 7' 0" x 22.75" x 3.5" x 70L
In The Pink (Incoming): 8' 0" x 22.9" x 3.25" x 70L

Blackproject Surge S77 (Soft Flex Shaft, T-Grip, +0" OH)

I know your pain, and sympathize. I have been riding every, reasonably constructed/designed board in my range for years looking for the perfect temperature of porridge.  Just looking at the dimensions, volume and the desire to find a used ride...have you considered a Jimmy Lewis Kwad 8'7"x29 115 liter board?  It's a pretty stable ride with quality construction. The nose is a bit wider and the tail is of the swallow variety making it equivalent in stability to many 30" boards.  I know a very good surfer that really likes his both in New England and in the tropics.

I have an order in right now for an 8'7" Creek, so I'm clearly in favor of that one!  I also really like the look of both of Anon's boards.  I recently saw the teaser for the new 2018 JP Surf Slate, which has a totally new shape and one I find interesting.  It's now more of a hybrid between a squared off planing hull like the hypernut and a more curvy traditional shape.  It looks quite similar to Anon's Omni.

They make an 8'2"x30 @128 ltrs which could be a good choice as well.

Gents

As always Thanks for all the words of advice and thoughts.  some great feedback- which i know I can always count on.

Unfortunately the local shaper route is a bit brutal here in NJ- LOST of accomplish surfboard shapers- but no one really doing surf sups with anything more than a vac bag and vector net- and certainly charging their weight.  Mostly because i think the market is just too darn small.

@Creek- your board definetly fits some of the criteria- but im worried I sit right in between two sizes.  I got a PM from one of our South Jersey friends that may have a solution.  As well- I hit up another  mutual friend up in NY that has an 8'7 I will beg him to let me try that is currently getting some work done.

@SurfAfrica- I definetly think I want to talk to your buddy. You have seen what hasnt worked for me (first hand across the country) and it would be great to get another shapers advice before I plunk down the cash. - again think i need to see some boards go before I order something.

@Anon.  I would love to get a Quiver Killer style shape- I just dont know how well it would handle chop which we get alot of.

@surf Shaver- Are you on the east coast with your Creek model?  That slate looks cool- but definetly too far from a traditional shape i think for my tastes.

@Jarvis- I have seen and held the Kwad and the rails are far too fat for me.....the Super Tech is the only board in that lineup I like- Although I would love to ride a Super Frank- but that would be more of a hypernut replacement.
