Congress Approves $80 Billion Increase in Military Spending
« on: September 21, 2017, 05:44:14 AM »
This 80 Billion dollar increase passed 89 to 8 in the Senate.  30 Billion more than the (already crazy) 50 Billion increase that Trump had requested.

Yup, we need a 700 Billion dollar a year military budget.  5 Dems and 3 Republicans voted against it.

Maddening to read this stuff.  It barely made the news.

We've got a couple of regular military personal here on the zone. They deserve a pay raise now and then so they can get new boards. Plus they need the funds to support that awesome pension plan they have ::)
It's not overhead to me!
8'8" L-41 ST and a whole pile of boards I rarely use.

Sadly, none of the increased military spending will go into increased pay for active or increased retirement pensions/benefits for veterans.

I'm a cold war kid. At that time the military budget was fundamentally infinite. So by comparison, this somewhat nutty number seems sane. I also understand that we waste vast amounts on pork--The F22 is nothing but a pork barrel. But realizing that, and looking at the military budgets of countries like China who are not only far more efficient but get to tap into the manufacturing capabilities we have bled to them. The kind of standard fraud that the military-industrial complex engages in here (to use Ike's phrase) would earn people a bullet in China. We do confront these countries militarily, even if we never go to war. Whenever someone rails about military waste I wonder if they'd be happier if those weapons got used.

Not sure why we need all of these weapons in this day and age. If someone really threatens us with an actual attack,  doesn't it only take one or two properly placed Nukes to bring it "ALL To AN End"?

Been watching the Ken Burn's series on the Vietnam "War".....what a disgusting mess we make of things when we decide we have to get involved in other people's business. As usual,  it looks like we picked the wrong side to help.  There just has to be a better way for folks to resolve their differences. For what we spend on the military,  we could have just purchased all of VietNam and then set them up with whatever they needed in the way of tools and training and feed and seed and then left them alone to setup whatever form of government they wanted.
From what I am getting from watching the series,  the early Vietnamese wanted independence from the French....they were't looking to become communists or seek the help from Russia or China....but when we got in the middle of things with all of our "might' they had to have help from someone.  What a stupid waste of
life and resources.

Been watching the Ken Burn's series on the Vietnam "War".....
Isn't that something else or what? Came in on it two nights ago. Simply Amazing documentary tho I have only seen  Part 3 and Part 4 so far. I am already a fan of Ken Burns documentaries but this one seems really special. You can watch on PBS online after they have aired. I still need to watch the first two nights and possibly tonight's online. I think it's going to be 10 parts. He is really running the gauntlet with so many dynamics of what was happening all across the board. Not sure if there is anything he didn't think of to make a complete story of what was going on. Unbelievably sad and I can't stop watching all at once and I was just a little kid when it was going on.

At times it is so very hard to watch.  I had highschool classmates that never came back.  But I force myself to watch because it is so revealing about how complex and involved the politics behind it were. All sides in this conflict suffered greatly. And for what?  Today business as usual goes on in VietNam and we visit as tourists as if nothing ever happened.  What a crazy confused world we live in.
Jacque Cousteau once had an idea that made some sense. Families should be required to send their children into other countries and cultures for a least a period of their education. We might start to raise a new generation that might at least have some respect and understanding of what other cultures are about.  And we might be reluctant to drop bombs on our own children :)........

lynn novick is a friend, and an excellent person-her daughter is one of my elder's bff's since 7th grade, and a friend of my younger's at college--i have yet to start the series, but have heard two lengthy interviews with her and ken burns--wow are they compelling folk--if my take from the interview is correct it will be a masterpiece for them, among the many wonderful films produced already

I heard the interview on NPR and watched one segment so far....and it can be hard to watch....such a terrible waste. Ken Burns has a way of shining the light on things that changes minds. A truly amazing talent. I wish he would shine a better light on our politicians. I think if we understood what the corrupt bastards are really up to we would tar and feather the lot of them.

If the thought is that we are buying fear and respect the other guys sure don't seem to know it.  Un (with his measly 10 Billion budget) is taunting the Dotard, ISIS has to be thrilled that we are fighting and old fashioned geographic war against a location unspecific ideology (14.3 Billion spent, 13.6 Million a day in Syria with 24,566 airstrikes), Iraq, Afghanistan, yup, still going.

^been there all my life. In fact I've never spend any time other than holidays in the countries of my passports, nor do I even speak the languages well enough to fill out my passport applications.

And, yep, I am currently working on humanitarian projects. Cleaning up after some bombs.
