Hurricane victims share food with UK troops sent to help after Maria & Irma destroy region
PEOPLE who lost their homes after Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria tore through the Caribbean this month have been sharing what little food they have with British troops who are helping with the relief efforts.
More than 1,000 UK military personnel have been working in the British overseas territories of Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands - all of which were ravaged by the category five hurricanes that have left the region in tatters.Troops who have been handing out tons of food and aid supplies across the devastated Caribbean islands have been humbled by the kindness of residents, some of whom have had their whole lives transformed by the hurricanes.Lance Corporal Adam Wellstead, 31, who has been working on Grand Turk island with the Royal Engineers, said: “The locals have been really supportive about what we are doing, making us food with what little they’ve got. They’ve been really appreciative.”Hurricane Maria path update LIVE Major Richard Grimsdell, who has been providing relief in the British Virgin Islands, said the experience has been “the most fulfilling experience of my nine years in the military”.The 34-year-old said: “The most remarkable and humbling thing is the community spirit of the people – they’ve been incredibly welcoming as well as helping us make sure the aid goes to the right places.”Royal Marine Magnus Frykman, who has been distributing water and food in recent days, described the experience as “really worthwhile”.He said: “Yesterday we went out in the back of a truck dishing out aid to some of the Haitian minorities, it is unbelievable what they are living in. “I saw a woman with a baby, fanning the eyes of its face, with a whole half of her house blown over and she has her washing up.“All the locals are really happy to see us - it is really worthwhile.”UK troops have continued to assist in any way they can as Hurricane Maria surges northwards, with the Turks and Caicos Islands next in its path after Puerto Rico was left without power and the Dominican Republic was thrashed as the storm passed around 50 miles off its northeastern coast.Hurricane Maria “destroyed most of what was left” of the British Virgin Islands after Irma ran riot through the Caribbean, according to one local resident. Karon Brown, 29, told the Guardian: “Irma did a lot of damage but, for me, Maria finished the job.“We already had flooding inside the house and lost most of our possessions in Irma. Before Maria came, we boarded the house up and tried to secure what remained. But Maria just ripped it all off – damaged the building more and destroyed most of what was left.“I want to get to my family in New York. The government and everyone is doing a great job of clearing up but if I am homeless and don’t have anywhere to go, I will just be a burden.” Maria has already claimed the lives of ten people after making landfall in dominica earlier this week, but British Virgin Islands governor Gus Jaspert said fresh damage to the archipelago is relatively low.He said: "We had high winds, we had a bit of flooding, and we had bit of a storm surge that knocked out some of the roads - but that thankfully we have been spared the worst."We are very mindful that others and colleagues in the region felt its full force and our thoughts are very much with them at the moment."We prepared for the worst, it hasn't been the worst which is good. We are back on to our recovery focus, which is our key thing.” . 00FastNews. Please Subscribe!
