A family is canoeing the Mississippi River from Minnesota to New Orleans.

They docked at the Shamrock Marine just north of the bridge past Bayou Belle.

They’ve been paddling for 46 days, dealing with bugs, not showering for days at a time but they are days away from the end.

Every paddle is a knot forward, but its hard to fight the current of the massive Mississippi River.

“You think you know what you were going to do each day but then the river throws something else at you, just have to learn to adapt and roll with the punches,”said Travis Mack.

It’s kind of like life, you never know whats coming next.

“We taken some big waves, but gotten more and more comfortable as we move down the river,” said Mack.

Mack said canoeing down the Mississippi from Minnesota to the end has been on his bucket list for years.

“He was sitting in a cubicle kind of day dreaming,” said Carrie Mack.

Carrie Mack, his wife on the journey too said they average 70 miles a day but it’s not easy.

“Physically it’s kind of challenging mentally and psychologically as well, I think the bugs target me, in Minnesota bugs are bad and we are seeing that more now here,” said Carrie Mack.

Mack said the Mississippi as we see in Louisiana isn’t what it looks like up north. She said it’s more of a stream compared to a mile wide in Baton Rouge.

The three people team are also taking water samples along the way for Missouri Valley College. Carrie Macks said the brown water looks the same as up north.

“We thought it would look different,” said Mack.

The team has 3 days left on the river, they’ll canoe to mile 0 where the Mississippi River dumps into the Gulf of Mexico.
