Hey Guys  :smt006
So im sorta torn between the Garmin Striker 4 and a Lowrance elite 3x dsi.  Can anybody possibly shed some light on which one is better?  I like the GPS chart plotting feature on the garmin but I would prefer a overall better depth finder rather than one that comes with a GPS.  I'll need to purchase 2 so im looking for something in the lower price range.

Thanks in Advance Gentlemen!!!

My Lowrance hook 4 has GPS chart plotting that works awesome.

A lot of the people here are Lowrance fans.

Whatever the brand, get one with GPS. There are just too many benefits to not have it. With all the money spent for everything the extra for GPS will be unnoticeable. Cosidering it could be helpful in the fog or darkness, just to name two. :smt006

Especially in salt water the depth finder will show you a reef, dropoff, pinnacle, etc as you pass over it.  The next trip or even a year or two later the GPS will allow you to paddle straight to it and start fishing/diving.

I would never own another finder without it.

The x in the lowrance model means no GPS. Look at the models from lowrance without the x.

Well, if you plan to use it in saltwater, avoid the DSI-only units!! They only work accurately to about 60fow in the ocean.

Why 2? Is your kayak a 2 seater?

I see this recommendation a lot here, but personally, I don't see any big advantage to gps on a FF. I carry my cell phone in a waterproof case and use that for gps. My FF is an older Garmin, which has held up well. IMHO, for a FF  on a kayak, you want to keep it simple.

They have this deeper sonar castable one I was looking at that comes with an app on your phone I figured I would just attach it to a short leader and tow or drift with it.  But if I'm gonna spend $120 might as well get an actual FF

Cheap/cheaper is relative.

I agree with the lowrance FF. Its a nice one, and the maps on the hook4 is pretty darn good. I found a lot of good honey holes using
just the internal map. Good FF but lowrance needs to make their FF more waterpoof. I've had a few units die from water damage, but
i don't think the avg. person fishes as much as tho. hmm... maybe i'm the issue. Lol. (Should i apply for product testing!?) :smt044 :smt044
