I was at he grocery store this afternoon where they were doing parking lot work and there was only a two foot wide section of sidewalk you could go on to get to out of the store.  There was an older lady standing in the middle of the walkway completely blocking it and texting on her phone.  I asked her to move and she apologized and quickly got out of the way, no prob.  Then I drove away in my car along an equally narrow space to pass the parking lot work, and a man was sitting in his car right in the middle of the space blocking traffic texting on his phone.

Obviously not to be confused with folks who post video related to progress, technique, board review, and stoke.  I, for one - and I'm sure there are a ton of others here and elsewhere - who have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and watch posted video, here and elsewhere countless times over attempting to gleam bits of information in an attempt to learn more about this sport and associated tools.

I really hope this thread topic doesn't prevent folks from posting such videos.......its THE primary reason I visit this site on a daily basis.  And quite honestly there aren't near enough videos here IMHO.  I REALLY wish more of the accomplished riders here would post clips and especially video.  Noobs like me crave this stuff!!!!!!!!  Ain't nothing self-indulgent about that!!!!!!

@WhatsSUP, check out this vid by Erik at Progression Project.   Some great analysis.

Some of this feedback has been what I hoped for. WhatsSUP, I didn't start this thread in hopes that people would stop posting videos, clearly you missed the point. I personally don't care for the GoPro videos, I think they're useless and old at this point but I do enjoy videos shot by someone else, not the 1st person view (selfie cam). Surfafrica posted an excellent video, here's another one by Erik that's worth the half hour: . I urge you to look for other content besides what you find on this forum. There are some excellent resources out there that offer unbiased reviews, tips, techniques and more.

I guess the reason I started this thread is because I'm sick of going out to ________ (literally fill in anything) and seeing every other person on their phone like a zombie. Digger's picture and Stoney's comment sum it up perfectly... I'd rather have the moment than the picture any day too.

I did quite a bit of filming last year with a gopro on my paddle.  I don't really like the angles and I know that most people can't really stomach watching it for more than a little bit, but I sure have fun putting the clips together.  Out in the water, I try to set it and forget it.  Turn on the camera and let it roll--try to forget it's on.  The only setup that's let me really do that is a gopro Session put on the paddle with a small custom clip that I made.

At the end of the year, I went through some footage and put together a bit of a compilation.  Fun looking back at the year.

Kayadogg:  Actually, what prompted me to post was Pono's comment about offering up all of his GoPro gear as he feels he has no future use.....super generous for sure and I'm sure someone will really appreciate it and hopefully use and enjoy the gear - maybe even post some vid's here - hopefully.  However, as one of the most prolific contributors here on the forum I was actually bummed to read his post as I've been long hoping to see some of his SUP sessions and technique, etc.  (There's lots of other here I'd love to see vid too - sorry to single ya out Pono!  ;)  I totally got the intention of the thread start and the bulk of the bulk of the replies.  Everyone here is wired a little bit differently and with all kinds of different gear, experience, technique, etc...just don't want any potential vid/pic poster to think "well, if I post this the guys are gonna bust my balls so maybe I won't". I'm sure most have thicker skin that that but for a Noob, and maybe others as well, to post they might thing twice....

Surfafrica:  GREAT video...I really like the breakdown/dissection.  Gonna watch that one a few more times for sure!  I remember your compilation video....really enjoyed that one too!  Good stuff!!!!!  Thx.

Although footage from the beach, drone, etc. is the easiest to watch and most enjoyable angle, I think footage from a board/head cam, paddle, board or tail, (and let's not forget Clay's pole mount cam) plays a key role in getting close in footage which is great for education and technique info.  Maybe the new super duper SoloShot camera with the 65 optic zoom will do the close up thing better(??)  Whoops, probably not a good topic either...

Kayadogg, sorry to have taken your topic off topic a bit just didn't want anyone to feel it wasn't cool to post vid stuff.  And thanks again for the vid and hope to see you again in RI soon!!! Best,

This is a great thread, and I don't think people should be taking it out of context, it's really not about informative videos per se'.
Maybe this little bit of humor will bring it back to it's original context.
It takes a quiver to do that.

Got rid of my GoPro too, as it was too much effort to use, edit etc, and never got good at it - and distracted from my enjoying the various sports.
I do enjoy others videos on this or other sites, so that I can learn their techniques.

A few years ago when it was predicted that everyone will be using phones all the time for all information - I didn't believe it.  Why would you not use a laptop or desktop.
Now I cannot cross a busy street without running into a moron who hasn't looked up once from the phone, while crossing the street and then continuing on the other side of the pavement!  I guess that is talent.
And, as a separate issue - I can't stand receiving texts that are 3+ paragraphs long.  Just call me if you have that much to say!!

One of my favorite pics floating around the internet.  Could just be that her phone died a few minutes earlier, but I like to think there is more to it

Cameras are ungainly out in the water and then the videos take awhile to edit.  It's a labor of love until you're not in love any more.

I did love that old lady with no phone pic.

you guys got it all wrong. Her phone just died.  ;D   hope not, of course.

This pic of Moscow's elites taking selfies during Easter service makes me cringe too. Especially if you knew that some random guy was sentenced to playing PokemonGo in church.

So is this what it's coming to?  Probably so.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Honolulu targets 'smartphone zombies' with crosswalk ban
(Reuters) - A ban on pedestrians looking at mobile phones or texting while crossing the street will take effect in Hawaii's largest city in late October, as Honolulu becomes the first major U.S. city to pass legislation aimed at reducing injuries and deaths from "distracted walking."
The ban comes as cities around the world grapple with how to protect phone-obsessed "smartphone zombies" from injuring themselves by stepping into traffic or running into stationary objects.
Starting Oct. 25, Honolulu pedestrians can be fined between $15 and $99, depending on the number of times police catch them looking at a phone or tablet device as they cross the street, Mayor Kirk Caldwell told reporters gathered near one of the city's busiest downtown intersections on Thursday.
"We hold the unfortunate distinction of being a major city with more pedestrians being hit in crosswalks, particularly our seniors, than almost any other city in the county," Caldwell said. Honolulu data on distracted-walking incidents was not immediately available.
For the rest~
Maybe we should be calling it "distracted living".
I went to see Kid Rock last week, and as soon as the concert started a sea of iPhones came out and started recording, it used to be Bic lighters for the band's benefit only, not anymore.
My wife will sometimes want me to take a selfie with her, and she looks great but I always look like an ogre so I avoid it at all costs.
I surfed with a GoPro for the first time a month ago. A little bit facing me on the board and a little bit in the mouth looking out. I found out some interesting stuff about my surfing regarding foot movement and positioning as well as some things I was doing more correctly than I thought I was. I also found out I will never put a second of it on-line, because I look even more like an ogre than in a dry-land selfie. However, the videos are fun to look at for me, it lets me re-live those moments and the fun that I was having.
Make paddleboarding great again!
