Lake Placid woman dies in apparent drowning after canoe capsizes, police say

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- An Essex County woman died Friday in an apparent drowning after a canoe she was in with two friends capsized on Lake Placid, the New York State Police said.

Around 6 a.m. troopers and Lake Placid firefighters responded to the east shore of Lake Placid off Ruisseaumont Way for a report of a capsized canoe.

Firefighters responded with two boats and found a canoe upside down in the water about a hundred yards from shore, The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reported.

Three people had been in the canoe, state police said. One of them, identified as 20-year-old Saige Borden, was found unresponsive and taken to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, state police said. She was pronounced dead shortly before noon Friday.

The other two people who had been in the canoe were able to reach the shore, state police said. Borden had not been wearing a life jacket and no life jackets were found in the canoe, The Lake Placid News reported.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the incident. State police said an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Lake Placid is north of the actual village of Lake Placid, and located in the towns of North Elba and St. Armand.
