Kayakers paddle on the Monocacy River in 2014.

On April 29, kayakers will travel the Monocacy River for a young boy facing a grave disease. Little d on the Monocacy, in its fourth year, gathers paddle sport enthusiasts for a 19.5-mile race and 6-mile cruise. The course offers a mixture of city and rural life, with highway overpasses along with potential sights of deer swimming and cows bathing in the water. For racers, the start line begins at Creagerstown Park. The 6-mile course begins at Riverside Center Park.

The event’s namesake comes from Daniel Sullivan, known as “Little d,” who was diagnosed with Infantile Metachromatic Leukodystrophy in 2014. The rare terminal disease has a life expectancy from 6 months to three years, but Little d continues to enjoy holidays and watch movies, a treasured pastime of his.
