A buddy of mine is buying a boat down in SoCal.

He primarily dives, but would like to get a few hook and line setups for when he has family visiting...

Targets would be SoCal reef fish (Calico, Sheephead etc), YT and WSB.

Any recommendations or ideas on what kind of rod/reel combo you recommend would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

Jim

Haha Those first comments made me die of laughter.

All jokes aside. best bet would be a 20-60 lb line rod and something that can hold lots of 65 lb braided line for them YT. I really like Avet reels. Definitely popular with socal fisherman

Or it's two different setups one like I mentioned and a second inshore rod 15-25 lb class with smaller reel. That's my go to for lings etc
I use a bigger rod for halibut and Seabass
Fishing is my escape kayaking is my passion.

If he wants budget rod and reel combo that will last longer than his boat, go with a Penn general purpose level wind and an ugly stik tiger rod. The old rock cod setup. Holds lots of line, handles anything from reef fish up to yellow fin tunas. And you can get that setup including line of your choice for under $150.
That setup will last for a long long LONG time.  It's nothing high end, no fancy pants features. But they are super reliable and they git'r DUN!!

My old stomping grounds.

You will certainly need a couple of set ups.  For Calicos and shallow water rock fish you will certainly want a level wind.  Think 400 size Shimano Calcutta/Corvalis/6500 Abu Garcia or if you like low profile reels a 300 Size Curado/Lexa or a 50/60 size Revo Toro and fill them with 30/40lb braid.  Find a good 20lb stick to match up.  I have some of the older Shimano Teramar rods in 7'6"-8'0" that I like.

For the YT and WSB you will need a good 30-40lb stick.  Avets are great reels you can also go with a Shimano Torium or Daiwa Saltist or to old school Penn's.  I'd also fill with braid this time in the 50-65lb range and again find a rod to match.  You will want some backbone to help pull the YT out.  WSB are good for one big run then its pretty easy after that.  A 6'6" or 7'0" stick is good and many companies Daiwa/Shimano/Penn/Seeker/Loomis make good rods

If you wanna spend a little money, daiwa lexa HD 400. Great reel, worth every penny, and perfect for yt, wsb, AND yft.

That Lexa 400HD is a great reel.  I've heard of 100#+ bluefin caught on those Lexas.  But, if I had to pick one reel, it would probably be an AVET.

With the big tuna that have been showing up, I'd definitely recommend your buddy to have at least 1 beefy setup capable of handling 20-30# of drag.  You never know when you might have a fish of a lifetime on the end of your line when fishing down there.   :smt007
