Hey folks,

So I know this has been a topic of discussion before (I went through every search/post about it) but I still haven't really found what I'm looking for yet.  And my brain is now hurting just thinking about it so I thought I would reach out to the group and get some more ideas.

That darn Dragonfly transducer is a beast.  I know I can rig it though the scupper hole on my Trident 11, but it will be too exposed for landings. (unless someone knows otherwise?)  The whole "in hull" option just seems like it will hinder the down vision too much.  I'm trying not to go the way of the Ram or Scotty arm mounts.  Which is kind of leading me fabricating some sort of mount on the stern where the rudder kit would normally go.

I would love to hear from folks that have an Ocean Kayak Trident series (ok, lets face it, I'll listen to anyone at this point.  Have an inner tube with a Dragonfly on it?  Great, educate me.  Children's water wings with a Dragonfly on it?  Awesome, drop some ideas on me) that has installed one of these and how you went about it.  And pictures would be great!  I've found a few ideas that are "maybes", but the more ideas, the better.  If MacGyver were here, he'd know what to do.......  :smt012

Thanks in advance,

Do a water bath inside the hull.  Thats what I did on my old Revo 13.

@FishingAddict - How has it performed in deep water?

@Fishcomb - Yeah, thanks. :smt044

It works fine.  I use a water bath on my AI.  The deepest I fish is 150 ft.  Make sure theres water inside the bath and your software is up to date.

Hi Mel thanks for reposting ! Still haven't had a chance to set up my dragonfly7. Question : what type of foam can I use. Does it need to be waterproof, if so where can you buy it? Also I see dux seal around the bottom right? Does the transducer bounce out of the bath when transporting / in use,
Thanks

i have a Lowrance Hook 7 (CHIRP).  Before i did a permanent install, I spent a month moving it  between the in hull bath and ouside the hull position during each outing.  I didn't really appreciate the difference.   So i mounted it permanently installed in the hull.  I fish depths from 10 to 120 feet.

HI Ken - I use closed cell foam from an old swimming kick board that I cut out.  I used Goop to make it stick to the hull, then put electrical putty around the mount to prevent water leakage.  I made a tight cut so the transducer fits snug inside the mount.   Then glued a couple of pieces of velcro on top of mount that acts like a seat beat for the transducer.

Thanks for the tip, michael1one.  Looks like that's the direction I'm going to go.  My only real last question is can you explain the concept behind doing a water bath?  I'm pretty sure I get the process, but just don't really understand the concept behind it.

And as for the foam, I'm guessing since FishingAddict used an old swimming kick board, the foam doesn't need to be able to soak up water, but is just used as the vessel to hold the transducer and the Duct Seal creates the water tight seal to hold the water in.

It turns out that sound waves do not go through air very well that is why the air bladder on fishes show up well on fishfinder.  When there is air between the transducer and the water, some of the waves do not penetrate well and the signal is degraded.  By creating a "pool" of water with foam or putty for the transducer, then it removes the air.  Alternatively, you could glue the transducer (without air bubbles) to the inside of the hull, but then you would not be able to move it and the signal would not be as good as a water bath.

michael1one - Thanks a ton for that explanation.  SUPER helpful!!!

I picked up the foam and Duct Seal last weekend and am hoping to find a little time either tonight or tomorrow after work to finish this up.  I will post up photos when I am done.

Again, huge thanks.

I just installed a dragonfly 4 on my tarpon 120 using the block and duct seal method, and it works perfectly. Its critical to have a water bath in the foam, but once that is there its the bees knees.

if it swims, fish it.
