Hero 5 Session coming to life.

My go-to camera was an 'older' Hero 3 Black.  It shoots perfectly well, in 2.7K.

However I have found that the Session is:
  • Ligther
  • Easier to turn on/off
  • Sync's better with TRACE

1st attempt with TRACE.  Sync before you go out.  Then shoot in 4K.

It only took 1 1/4 yrs to get this to work but I can see this being a great feedback tool for speed down the line.  This was in some chop 6 ft @ 12 seconds.

As I get feedback from other people with 'Trackers' I am constantly surprised by how slow the prone guys go.  I am not sure why.  Hopefully this video feedback will answer some questions.

That's really cool, I've had my Trace for a year, and I've never been able to get the synced video with GoPro, mainly because I don't have a mac and when I try and use Dropbox, the files are too large.

Any suggestions on trying to get it to work (which I love the  Trace by the way). I seem to average 18 MPH on my now-sold Hokua X32, and roughly 13-15 MPH on my noserider on slow EC waves. Costa Rica I definitely get a bump up to around 20.

More Trace GoPro fodder.  Here was another Test Sample.

GoPro Session 5.  Yes - The files are enormous UNLESS you submit a single wave at a time.  I do NOT record constantly.  Tried that DIDN'T work, and you will overwhelm the DropBox.

Here is a segment in 4K @ 30 fps.  This segment alone was ~ 200 MB (DropBox will hold up to 2 GB)
  • Sync your GoPro using the Trace App BEFORE YOU SURF - EVERY TIME
  • Just film the Individual Waves
  • Wait for TRACE to process the Video then remove from the DropBox to free up more space

So you submit the Video files, after you have uploaded your TRACE statistics, ONE WAVE AT A TIME.  You can submit the entire timeline, but if you shoot at 1080P or 4K your files will be too big.  What is cool is that TRACE is processing the 4K video and producing 4K results.

This is a sample of Mavericks FLAT.  The buoys were 3 ft.  This spot was 6 - 7 feet.  When it's small and feckless its fun to shoot the rocks at a spot we call "EY's" for Extreme Yakers - The place no Kayaker would ever go.

The takeoff is the most critical because if you fall you wash directly onto the rocks (1st Photo).

Once you get going down the line its best to tuck your knee as close to the rock as possible.  It's dicey but if you fall (second shot), ideally, you flush between the two sets of rocks into the shallow bay.  Yakers were cheering me on in the distance.

With the 4K resolution you can actually see the Blue indicator light on the Trace.

This is really cool. Low technology from my Garmin App and watch informs me that I have gone 15 mph on an 8' JP Slate in head high slow mushy conditions. Slloooww! But one wave was a 100 yards long. Welcome to Hull!

How fast is fast?
I'd love to know what kind of speed Cabrinha achieves in this clip, even with boots on!

It takes a quiver to do that.

Yesterday I clocked Tom Brady going 28.5 mph at Mavericks.

As I said 30 mph is FAST.  Tough to achieve >> 30 mph on a surfboard.  If Tom Brady can't do it at Mavericks then who can?

At Mavericks I have clocked speeds ranging from this 28.5 (slow) up to 31 mph.

HOWEVER: Yesterday I convince Haley, the Obi Wan Kenobi of SUP surfing Mavericks, to buy a TRACE.  This should get interesting.  He catches roughly 10:1 my wave count at Mavericks.
