Went lake fishing on a sunny day last Saturday, and could barely make out my Mark 4's screen even in the shade. I "think" I had the light level as high as it could/would go? but...still not much joy! So, does anybody have a suggestion besides having my eyes changed? I wear polarized glasses and am wondering "if"?  a piece of polarized mylar fixed to the screen face would increase light contrast? Perhaps a neoprene shade in front of the screen, extending toward my eyes a foot or so(?) from the front of the meter would help provide more shade?

Any thoughts/ideas?

TIA

Because the output on the screen has such tight wavelength, polarized glasses make it hard to read, especially if it is a B?W screen. Turning up the brightness will do no good. If you remove your polarized glasses and can see it then that is what you will have to do.
I had an old B/W and had to do just that since I too thought it was the screen.

You say you think it was as bright as it would go. Start by checking the brightness level to be sure. Try it without the sunglasses. I'm thinking you should be able to see it easy if it is turned up all the way.

Invest in a larger screen size and get a 7 inch screen.  You won't go back.  :smt002

LCD displays and polarized sunglasses don't work together.  That's why aircraft pilots cannot and do not wear polarized glasses.  I forgot that just the other day and thought my camera had died while trying to take an AOTY photo, took the glasses off to troubleshoot and voila! all was good..

Slide the glasses up and check the screen.

Thanks for all the replies. My Mark 4 IS a gray scale B&W meter. I have 2 boats equipped with the compatible cables for the older model Mark 4 and Mark 4X. I swap the meter and battery between both boats.

Question#1 - Is there a 7 " screen compatible with the cables above? I might(?) start looking for a used 7" meter.

Question#2 -  Does a 7" meter fit within the Sonar Shield compartment on an OK Trident Prowler?

Question#3 - I "assume" a Lawrence 7" meter can be used with a RAM Scotty mounting system?

I am going to give it another shot again this Sunday with and without the Polarized glass to see what appears.

#1  It depends on the cables.  If the power cable to head unit connector is red, yes.  The more important question is whether the transducer will be compatible.

Call Lowrance.

#3.  They are compatible, but... a 7" head unit will weigh more than the 4" unit.  If your RAM mount will support the weight - if it will hold the head unit in the position you want it in - you're good to go.  Test it before buying new mounts.

I moved from a 4" to a 5" head unit and upgraded from 1" RAM ball mounts to 1.5" "heavy duty" RAM ball mounts before testing, and in the end, really didn't need the "heavy-duty" mounts.
