New guy intro. I had a wild idea a while back and no idea if it'll work but I like to try wild ideas. Registering my kayak for commercial fishing and getting my commercial license this month. I popped in here to see if anyone else is doing the same. Will be in the Monterey bay chasing rockfish and California halibut mostly. Don't worry I'm in it for the write offs, not the money. I have a full time job and would be lucky to go out a few times a month.

Welcome aboard.

Unless you are really small and have a big kayak I am not sure you will be catching and storing enough to be rolling in the dough.  So if write offs is what you need it sounds like it may work for you.

Seems to me that you could charge a decent premium if you can line up the right restaurant buyers or CSA.

Just curious who you have to weigh your fish for you ?

So according to the warden I talked to I can weigh my own with a trade scale certified by weights and measures. Whether I go with the $775 receiver's license or just use it for transportation receipts looks like I'm out another $700-800 just for the scale. I still need to figure out a couple things with the receiver license and if I really need it or want it. The biggest draw is the ability to land my own fish so I can sell to just about whoever I want. Curious if you might know, do I need a catch monitor program and plan? I'm going to the DFW office in Ryan Ranch this week to finalize a few things. Other than that I've intro'd myself to a receiver on the muni wharf who seems willing to do business if all else fails.

I have been meaning to visit the DFW office so that they can answer the weighing questions for me as well. From speaking to commercial fisherman about the weighing process, it sounds as though receivers typically don't want to be bothered by such small catches or that they are not interested if you are not selling product to them.

I thought about doing some light weight commercial fishing as well, but as you mentioned the receivers license and scale can be costly.

Drop me a line if you get some  news. Thanks

Alex

Welcome!

Meathunter had a commercial license for his yak a few years ago...might want to drop him a PM if you have questions about how it went for him...

He's not super active online these days but I still see him out on the water.

Sincerely,

Jim

Welcome!

Sounds like a good time if nothing else. And after recover from your initial cost it sounds like you could at least pay for your fishing trips with it after some time. It'd be awesome to get some of the restaurants on the water in your corner, that may be the way to go.

Let us know how it goes!

I going to be doing the same here in next few weeks.  I'm just going to start out selling directly to the consumer to avoid the extra permits.  If you sale to restaurants it's another permit.  If you plan to sell filets to restaurants then it's an additional permit.
Have you registered your kayak with DMV yet?

Good luck! I know a few guys who've done it. I'm planning to do something similar next year.  Just remember that you can't ask for help carrying your kayak while fishing under your comm license hahaha...at least, not from rec guys :-)  There are a lot of little things to be aware of. I'd also suggest you send a PM to meat hunter Tim. He might have some good tips.
