Try this:

Scotty Power Lock rod holder

http://www.ceshowroom.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CWR40808&click=2&gclid=CLXxsP_9ttICFQ2ffgodZv4NMQ
I have these rod holders and they are pretty wide.
I just got one. If I put my rod in from the end it fits in just fine. If I put my rod in the way it is supposed to be used it won't fit in. The tube itself is big enough but the opening slot is not wide enough. I can take my grinder to it and open it up some more but that will probably wreck the lock.  :smt009

For the longest time, I have been using Scotty Rocket launchers. It fits all my saltwater rods. I also like how the rod handles/butts will not stick towards the deck. The only disadvantage is the long reach, specially if you mount it farther. My recent sturgeon fishing trip made me want to invest in a quick release rod holder. First I bought Stealth holders --- too small for my other rods, looks great for freshwater. I then bought a Scotty Orca. Looks promising, just a bit bulky. I was considering Folbe per Alex's recommendation, but it will require me to swap out my scotty mounts (deal breaker). The possible problem I see with holders like Stealth and Scotty Orca is that you'd have to mount them on the opposite side when trolling specially if you position your rods 90 degrees. You may even have to put an extender for clearance. May not be a problem with paddle kayaks, but it will be for Hobie users. Now, if they can only incorporate a quick release with Scotty Rocket launchers, that would be perfect.

Has the price come down on these at all, or is there any kind of regular sale on them?

I use an extender so I can clear the pedals for 90 degree placement.  However, I do use a gear head extender, so if I have to do a quick release, I would just pull the whole rod holder then take it off later.  Not the most graceful, I know.  But it works.

With the Orca, you would need a locking mount.  You can use an extender with a locking mount as a base.  But in my case, it won't work.  I have to use the longest mount available (scotty stainless one).  I supposed I can play around with angle placement, but ....

I don't use extenders under my rod holders, because they increase the stress which the rod holder's base puts on the hull of my kayak.  I mount my rod holder low on the left gunwale of my Revolution, with the rod pointing up and to the right, at right angles to the centerline of my kayak.  I position the rod a couple inches behind my left toe when my left pedal is all of the way back.  The rod doesn't interfere at all with pedaling in this location, and the rod is close enough so I can grab it out of the rod holder easily when I get a strike.  Another advantage of mounting my rod in this location is that when I take my rod out of its holder, I move it towards the center of my kayak, and can keep my weight solidly centered in my kayak.  I don't mount my rods pointing away from the center of my kayak, because I would have to reach out over the water when taking the rod out of its holder, which would risk unbalancing my kayak.

I have been using Scotty bases and rod holders mounted on a gear track.  I prefer locking  bases, because you can easily pull a rod holder up out of a non-locking base when you jerk your rod out of its holder, and you risk losing the rod holder overboard.  Scotty Gearheads are locking bases, but they are lousy for use on trolling rods because the tension of the fishing line constantly twists the rod out of position, even if you tighten the Gearheads down really tight.  So I made my own locking rod holder bases which mount on the gear tracks on the gunwales of my Revolution, and which hold my rod at right angles to the centerline of my kayak.  See http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=13167.msg144750#msg144750 .

I have no idea, but I'd say they're worth the asking price.

Great ideas here, I still haven't made a decision  :smt044

Reason being is I have 3 kayaks, all set up with Railblaza mounts, so it's easy to swap back and forth. I realized that if I went to a different holder for that one specific rod, I'd be limited to it's positioning and what kayak I could take. It'd be easier if all my boats had rails, but the AI and Tarpon don't, and I'm not sure I'm willing to install them.

Going to look into removing the end cap, just have to talk myself into it!

Thanks guys!

I'm having a hard time imagining what a quick release on a rocket launcher would look like...

Fixed it! Carefully removed the cap, and wrapped in heat shrink. Wasn't as terrifying as I thought, and it now fits my existing holders.

But at least if anyone searches rod holders there's a lot of info here  :smt044
