Hey Folks,

I just want some info if anyone has experienced of having the place they are renting get sold.

Background: We have been living in this house for over 14 years last week my landlord just informed my wife he sold the house (under foreclosure) the new owner would like to meet with us. We are told by the landlord. If want to keep the house the new owner is willing howevee wanted $700 increase on the rent. The house some have known with many issues. The landlord (original owner) says he has nothing to do with it anymore. I have appointment tomorrow with an attorney. According to tenant union they cannot raise the rent more 10 percent without 6 months noticed. Thanks for any input.

Full disclosure: I live in Oregon now, but lived in the bay area for a bit in my college years.

Your lease (if not month to month) is valid with the new owner and they are obligated to uphold the lease legally. If you're on month to month lease then it's a bit of a different story unfortunately. Do you live in the city itself? It looks like there's legal limits to how much your rent can be raised on a yearly basis. Most nearby cities likely have laws in place for rent increases... I would check it out.

I saw a local news special on this, the tenant has spent over $40K on attorney fees to fight the landlord.  It was pointed that City of SF doesn't really investigate if the  owner or relative move-in is really moving in.

I will never understand the Bay Area.
Yea the pay might be better but you lose it all on the other end.
Plus the traffic or the commute or both is a deal killer for me.
I am glad you guys do it though, makes living up here a lot less congested.
Thank you.

That's for real. Plus finding housing you have to compete with 300 other couples or families... not worth the BS.

You've already done the best thing - made an appointment with an attorney.
Fight it until they make it worth your while to move out.

Sorry to hear this Darius.

As much as you may not want to hear this, I think I should say it.  You probably should stop buying/selling kayaks left and right and spend that money towards moving out or for lawyer expenses.  Its really frustrating to see you and your family go through all this trouble yet you're constantly buying and selling gear.  Stay focused bro!

Time to buy
it's the best option to control your life
The only co workers I know that Owen in the Bay Area live in the worst parts of town or inherited the house or both I call them the slave class
Most drive 100 or more miles a day or more for the better wage and sacrifice a Having a life
I can't imagine being told you gotta go
But my brother in law often sells houses in areas that have price lock in place or will do extensive upgrades forcing the tenants out there are a lot of ways to remove tenants
Best of luck
glade you made it
now let's get our fish on

I am sorry, it is shocking.  I have had scary financial situations like this and the money can be found for the adjustment.  Maybe negotiate 350 or 400 increase and tighten that budget.  I dread that kind of news and I hope it works out perfectly.
