GoPro Hero 5 Black and Hero Session 5
« on: September 20, 2016, 04:38:36 AM »
Looking forward to the new GoPro Hero 5 Black which launched yesterday and starts shipping next month. Anyone had a chance to get your hands on one yet?

The vid is a bit OTT, but I'm looking forward to getting rid of all the housings that fog up, and also seeing how the image stabilization and voice activation works

I have a surplus of action cameras now, a bunch of kickstarter campaigns came through all at once, and they all have better specs, better performance, and better form factors than the GoPro 4. But this offering definitely puts GoPro a jump ahead. It's probably near the limit for what can be squeezed into a box like that with current technology and manufacturing experience. I suspect the first units will have some problems, though the heat issue of a sensor that size might not be one of them. Getting them out of the case should help that.

The days of fuzzy video from action cameras is over. The drone offering is excellent too--they must have hired some of the leading experts to put that feature set together with their first offering, though they aren't offering anything innovative there, just state of the art with good form factor, good feature set and nice UI. The stick is clever and will be copied by most drone companies that currently supply gimbals. It's something I thought of a few years ago. How many gimbals do we have to buy?

The leading edge in the drone world is obstacle avoidance. Follow me and autonomous flight is limited if your keep running the drone into trees.  I expect waterproofing will become more important as use expands. I bet the gimbal isn't waterproof, though they could relatively easily be made so. AC motors don't care much about water except for the bearings, which can be sealed, though at the cost of some "sticktion" and resultant jitter. Not an impossible design challenge, just needs enough demand to make it worth solving.

In all, I'd say they saved their bacon and built the camera they needed to build. If I wasn't looking at a box full of dead GoPros and a handful of high-spec non Gopro cameras I'd be first in line.

Voice control is everything in the water. I wanna be able to yell at my GoPro when a wave is coming instead of scrambling for the button.

My GoPro 5 turned up in the mail today, so looking forward to seeing how the stabilization and voice activation works... Looking online at all the Vloggers who were given advanced samples of this, it also looks like it has better battery life than the Hero 4 Black..

I have the Hero 4 Session and really like it's simplicity. I don't use it as much as I'd like to though. I only have a GoPro Chesty for videos. It works well when i am digging or grading in my equipment. For paddle boarding, SUP surfing and downwinding it's not ideal due to being bent over, or leaning to one side so often. Perhaps a head-mount would be better?

The Hero 5 Session looks the same as the 4, but with voice control. Is that basically correct?

idownwind. It has image stabilisation, voice control, better slow mo and longer battery life amongst other things. Just search on YouTube for some of the comparisons. Here are some

Mic Bergsma has some of the best GoPro instruction vids for sure.

iDownwind, the other biggie for the Session 5 over the Session 4 is that it can be used with the new drone.  (Although the new offering from DJI looks like it will give GoPro some serious flat out drone competition, if you already have a newer GP, the Karma seems a great option to expand your kit.)

I was at the new DJI flagship store in Hong Kong yesterday and had a hands on go with the DJI Mavic Pro.. it's a tough call if you have not had a drone before (like me) but are a GoPro person (like me). The Mavic is impressively easy to fly, and has more sensors to make that easier than the Karma... I'm waiting and seeing for a while...

Great point supuk.  I had kind of the same issue with the Session 4, the Session floats are just bulky, but at less than a couple hundred bucks, have decided to go without a floatie.  I don't think I would be as flagrant with a 5.

The positioning of the float has garnered a lot of discussion online. The 5 comes with an open cradle frame that snaps over it like the old waterproof case but is obviously open. You could use an old float and stick on the back of the GoPro over the LCD screen but that would suck... Looking at this there are ways to get a thin paracord in between the frame and the GoPro. I expect they will make a custom made float for it though

Wo... :-\ that is hard posting a picture from an iphone..

I learned my lesson and have float and leash although I'm now just using a cheap go pro nock off. It's stupid the don't have a leash point built in by now, I can only think they don't on  purpose to raise the risk of people loosing them to increase sales.

I have two Hero 3s which I use quite a bit.  Question for any Hero 5 owner:  will it work with the remote, and is there a small loop somewhere to attach a leash?

I got Hero 5 as a bday present. Can I get some advice for the accessories please. For filming in general shall I get a chest mount or head/helmet strap thing? For the paddle attachment which adapter would you recommend? The ones for bicycle bars? The Jimmy Lewis boards come with FCS inserts on the nose, that will solve that part.

Bike bar mounts work for paddles, there are a few threads on here about them. Search "paddle mount".

Not sure about the rest.
