Hi All,

Im brand new to the site so thanks in advance for your suggestions.

To date I've had two boards a 10ft 60/40 adventure a total tanker but good for small waves and rivers ect. i found the 60/40 hard to turn so before my summer break i got a fanatic allwave 9,4ft. I just got back from two weeks down the coast and loved the allwave very surf able got some really awesome waves even some decent overhead stuff. while i love the allwave i did trial it while weighing around 110kg I'm now now down to 100ish and hoping to keep the trend going. I think i may have been better off waiting to trial at my current weight.

my question is what should i look to next, something relatively future proofed that i won't need to be replacing in 12months time. I also surfed with some guys on very unstable boards these blokes where good surfers but where struggling standing between sets id like something fairly stable if thats possible. I like the look of sunova boards but wonder if id struggle with the stability issue due to low volume...

Anyways thanks again for any advise I've already taken some advise form previous posts but with designs changing all the time i thought i just ask direct.

Cant believe I'm a complete sup wanker.

cheers

For stability, the most important thing is to stay with shapes wide enough in the nose and tail, like the allwave.
At 100kg, 130 / 150 liters should be enough for what I guess is your level. 150l for a allwave-like shape, 130l for a stubby-like shape.

The 9.2 Sunover speed is a great board at around 148 ltrs i think, yes its not quite as wide as what some like but thats why it surfs so good.See if you can demo one.Good luck

Chunky, have a look at my post from December 31st. My situation is similar to yours, although I'm only about 71 to 75 kg. The advice I received there was excellent and I'm going to try to demo a Sunova Speeed early in February. Natural Neccesity at Geringong demo many different Sups, and Balmoral shop in Sydney does too, including Sunova. A couple of my mates have Jimmy Lewis Strikers [about 9'] and I've tried them...pretty good but I'm trying a Naish Nalu Le [9'6" I think] from another mate. Sunovas sound great and every You Tube clip is very impressive. Like you, this will have to a board that grows with me for quite a few years. GOOD LUCK!

Note that I found that what is important is the width before the feet. Say the 2' before the handle.

This is the key for stability and not digging a rail on taleoffs.
You can then have a narrower rear section for fast rail-to-rail. Like the Speeed has.

Wide tails bring a lot of stability too, but if you take care of keeping your weight on the front of your feet, not your heels, you wont need it.

Here's your challenge... Based on what you have achieved thus far, the 9'2 Speeed would be a good choice right now. At 30" wide I guess it may initially be a bit tippy. But if you think you will lose more kgs, and if you will surf frequently, and if you will keep your allwave (which you can ride if the conditions are crap or if you add some winter kgs), then you could consider the 8'10 speed. I am 97 kg right now and ride that board (and smaller) but I have been sup surfing for 3 years. My guess is that you will love the 9'2 and it is a good progression from what you are doing now, but I suspect that it won't take too long before you will be ready for the 8'10.

One comment about the speeed though; it is long, straight and fast, but you have to get your weight back on the tail to properly turn it. I get a bit frustrated on my 8'10 and I am 6'3. A board like the Sunova Flow will have to be wider than the speeed of the same length, but I think it surfs better (if you like turns). I have the 8'7 flow but it would definitely be too short.

Hope that helps....

I'd look at the Flow over the Speeed, perhaps 9'2 or a Style XL 10' - that is if you're set on Sunova.

The Speeed is great in performance conditions, as long as you get your rear foot right back. In small waves I didn't like it at all. There is so much hype on forums like this it makes you think it truly is the answer to everything. I guess maybe i'm just the odd one out

The Flow will turn from the middle and will work in all conditions, it also has a flat deck, not rolled like the speeed. You can run as a quad or thruster. It would be a logical progression from the allwave.

A Style XL is a sweet noserider longboard that rips if that suits your surfing.

I've had a 9'2 Speeed and currently own a Sunova custom surf longboard 10'4 x 28 x 140L and i'm between 100kg and 108kg.

If I had to choose one board, a longboard style SUP would be my pick as it isn't so dependant on riding the smallest board - so you buy one and it'll always be in the quiver. Shortboards usually need to be ridden in the smallest possible size for the best performance, so as you drop weight and improve skills, you'll want to sell and buy a smaller board IMO.

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for all the feedback. Ive never really used forums before but I'm guessing this one is a stand out.

Based on all your advise I'm thinking Sunova speed 8'8 or 9'2 or the fanatic stubby 8'8 both about 130lt 30 wide. I has a look at them both at Wetspot here in canberra yesterday. The fanatic stubby look like it may be slightly more forgiving for someone like me but the price tag is a little bit of a turn off $2500+. The Sunova is a very sexy looking bit of gear, but does look like it may be a little too advanced for my style. I am keen to be challenged and i want something to grow into.

And i do plan to hold on to my allwave.

Does anyone have some experience with the stubby specifically the 8'8?

Hoppo i hear what your saying about a long board style although I've never surfed a longboard style.

Cheers

Chunky,
I have not ridden the 8'8", but have owned the 8'6" Stubby for since Sept 2015 (from Wetspot Watersports). It was my step down board from a 10' all-rounder, and when I first got it I was near 90kg. Unless it's really ugly conditions I was immediately pretty comfortable stability wise, and being a few kgs lighter now it's just more stable. Other things I really like are:
- Carbon innegra construction is tough. I have had a few instances of board meet rock or paddle where I thought I would be doing some repairs and there is barely a mark.
- The tucked in tail of the board gives it a more traditional feel than the full minion shape. Will have similarities to your allwave off the tail.
- Versatile in a range of conditions from tiny peeling waves to solid winter swells.
Long story short, I am super happy with the Stubby

Hi Guys,

Just thought id drop back and let you know I settled on the sunova speeed 8'10. Took it for a little paddle on the lake last night to get the feel for it seems pretty stable, can't wait to get it in the surf. I was probably keener on the stubby but with a sunova sale on and the boards being having such similar dimensions the $600-$700 price difference won me over. Its a pretty sexy bit of gear so happy all around.

Thanks again for the advise!

HI Chunky. I'd love to hear your surf report on the Speeed. I'm virtually committed to a Speeed but tossing up between the 9'2" or 8'10. Your report might just sway me. I'm still about a month away from a purchase [expensive, aren't they?] but am definitely buying! Cheers.

Hi Guys,

I got down the coast Saturday arvo. We went to Broulee it was pretty washey with a consistent breeze that made life a bit tough for the maiden voyage. The speed is lovely while conditions where far from ideal I didn't have too much trouble waiting for waves until fatigue set in at least. First impressions where zippy the rocker is surprisingly dramatic which meant I was able to get over some whitewater thats previously would have been struggle. Im no pro and with crappy conditions I'm not able to say much more ill let you know if anything stands out on my next voyage (hopefully Saturday).

cheers

Hi Bear,

I picked it up for 1900 from wet spot water sports Fyshwick they happened to have 200 off sunova on the day I went in. That being said I was unable to find it cheaper elsewhere online ect.

Great advice in there . my mate has the 9'5 speeed and weighs approx 110 kg his words are best sup he has owned over the 7 years he's been riding ( till the next best thing arrives ). I'm 9o kg and ride the 8' shroom and the 8'8 speeed and can't fault either ..A great new player in the market would be the Spitfire from Smik i rode the 8'3 in the Maldives and loved it .an oldie but a goodie is always a smaller all wave from Fanatic.
I know I've thrown a few models in there but all boards offer something in look and performance but they all work provided you get the right balance of length width and volume for your weight, ability and type of waves you are riding.
Its always a bonus if you can try before you buy.
Just make it fun and enjoy the hell out of it.
