Oddly still runs like a top and loves it flat out.  Now classed as collector and vintage and still going strong.  Bought it new from the dealer long ago.  My favourite car - as it has a lot of sentimental value.  Is my primo SUP carrying vehicle.  Handles up to six boards.

Thinking of replacing my venerable Chrysler Town & Country with a Dodge Journey, 2012 or newer (2011 and newer Drivetrain: 3.6L Pentastar V-6 mated with a 62TE 6-speed auto transmission).  Interior cargo space looks good, all seats fold flat. However, I don't know if it will fit my 9'9" and 10'2" go-to SUP surfboards on the inside....looks like the nose of the board would have to rest on the dashboard. Access to the top roof racks would be easier than a Minivan...

Any Zoners with experience using a Dodge Journey as a SUP Toy Hauler? Recommendations Pro/Con?

judging from that photo, I'd also consider the rear cargo door.  Looks like it opens very far and would hit any longer boards strapped to the roof. might not be an issue for some..

I say this because I was looking at Volvo XC 70, but the way the cargo door opened , the hinge hit anything strapped to the roof even my 8'10" Hobie Raw .  Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't like the door hitting my boards day after day...

the New funmobile, Hood river version. I'm going to get some shit from Covesurfer and Headmount about this, I know.

Those metal hooks "sing" when you hit freeway speeds, I took mine off. Nice ride. I didnt know (didnt look too hard) there was a tonnau cover that worked around those racks.  Noticed you made your own rack pads...its hard to get regular pads to fit those wide bars.

This was my last car, replaced last spring by an Outback. I run a mobile sup biz which requires the effort of having to haul it all to the beach. Didn't go with a trailer due parking issues there. This was one of the bigger days and do have a pic of 10 on top including deflated inflatables. Thule rack.

Rob,
How wide do you get your bars to get the side by side stacks to work?

I've gone with my factory toyota highlander racks for years and don't plan on upgrading until I replace the vehicle, but you have to do the groundwork for that early in my experience.  Wife has Thule racks on her Mazda, which has had 5 boards stacked for short stretches in the past.  Solid as a rock.

YIKES!
Not to play safety cop here...but, I hope other folks don't get the idea that this is SOP for anything other than short trips on surface roads around town...

Thule aero style bars are rated for 220#...and, their square bars are rated at 165#...but, the maximum load capacity of your roof rack system will be dependent on the lowest rated part of the system, which will generally be your roof...IOW, if your vehicle roof is rated at 100#...then 100# is the max rated safe load capacity...

I would also recommend running an "oh sh*t" strap around the whole bundle and through the door jams...we've had a number of clients lose their racks with SUPs attached at freeway speeds...

A few of those boards look like they are over 30#...so, it's easy to max out loads...YMMV...;-)

Lazlo--got the Ferrari going--very cool. Now you need some racks for it. I carried my SIC F18 in the passenger seat of my 360 spider. Freaked people out.

Gotwaves -- I got one of the fabric rollup tonneaus and modified it to wrap the rack posts. If you look carefully you can see the strain relief pockets are the same fabric as the rack pads. Good ol' Tuffsew.

Hmmm, guess I need an update. I made pad covers.

Send me the dimensions. I've got a bunch of 1000 denier cordura in a weird sort of aqua color. Anything I make from it will remain when cockroaches rule the earth.

How come you're attaching the boards all "euro", pono?

I'd have thought "cali" style fins forward top down would be a bit more efficient once you're going over 200 mph. Plus you be pads-on-bar, no?
