3pcs travel paddle size option ?
« on: January 15, 2017, 05:33:20 PM »
I'm looking to get a better paddle to use with my inflatable SUP.  Imagine 10'2 board.   I have the standard Alloy version with a 105 sq in blade.    I'm looking to buy a new travel paddle as I take the board with me on plane in pretty much all our trips.  Something lighter and very versatile.   As I love to surf in the FL small waves in the summer and go around in the inlet also.   Use it at all inclusive with the family in Mexico this year.. never know what conditions you are going to have.    I'm 6 feet and 165 and from what i understand small high cadence seems the way to go.   Here at home I paddle calm lake or rivers

Basically I have the choice of 106 - 100 - 96 or 86 sq in .   I was thinking going 96.

Thanks for the input

Ernie

Ernie,

  I'd recommend the 86

I have paddles ranging from  110 - 81 and my go to paddle is the 81 for racing and downwinding, and I'm a a good chunck heavier than you. I'd surf it as well but its too long,  I surf with an old 100 that I shortened for my kid, but I'm thinking about getting a smaller paddle for that as well

Thanks Kaihoe.    Would the 86 work good just cruising around on flat lakes ?

I think as long as you get anything but the standard aluminum stuff you will be much happier.

Some stuff here in a previous thread - http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,31034.0.html- I was just looking into better 3 piece paddles for an upgrade - but my older one is already LOTS better than a standard - I also have a regular aluminum paddle that I hate using :D . I 100% paddle lakes  - maybe some streams this next summer....

My birthday is coming up - but I have till April (maybe May if it stays -20) for the ice to clear...

If you go by Jim Terrell's formula, it's the 86 you want. You can find his video and explanation here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9OdQ86xAjQ&feature=youtu.be
Infinity Blackfish 12’ 6” x 23”
ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 24”
Infinity Whiplash 12' 6" x 24 1/2"
ONE SUP Evo 12’ 6” x 26”
Bark Competitor 12’ 6” x 29”
Red Paddle Explorer (Inflatable) 13' 2" x 30
Starboard Airline (Inflatable) 12’ 6” x 27

That is very cool formula and more confusing  !  :)   I read the Faq before on QB site but never seen that video.

Thanks for the info

Aloha Ernie,
Here's another option...I'd recommend the 90in2 blade at your weight...
