I've done a bit of plug fishing from the bank or from a stationary position on my yak, but it's more fun for me when I'm in the open current and ready to use the water around me for the fight (and the movie :smt001).

Looking forward to my favorite waters getting back to this quality:

Thanks for the article Vick I fish like that a lot works well. The biggest problem is the crowds as it  ties up the hole. That's why I fish areas with no people. Nothing more exciting when a Steelie tries to rip the rod right out of your hand, they crush the lures I have had them break plugs. It can get expensive.

Hey Vic I hit the Russian twice this week and it was empty of people. You could have practiced any technique you felt like and not bothered a single person. Have extra grenades laying around? Toss em in and see what the fish think! There wasn't a person around for miles who would have heard!

That being said I didn't get any bites and haven't heard of any caught yet. Soon I hope! This post gives me another idea on something to try. Thanks for the link!

Let me know if you want company.  I'm getting anxious to hit the American River this year.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn.

I'd be a bit cautious about using braid on a shallow stream. Mono will take the abrasion from the rocks in the stream bed a lot better than braid.

I use 30lb braid with a 10-15 foot top shot of mono. I just change the mono for the conditions. Light line for clear water, heavier line for murky water. It's much easier than refilling my whole reel for different conditions.

I use Yo-Zuri Hybrid 12 very strong less stretch than mono decent knot strength and good abrasion resistance. Too bad they don't make the smoke anymore only clear, some shops still have the smoke in bulk. I like to keep it simple no leader if the water is really clear I'll drop down to 8/10lb. You know not many fish in the system when the water is perfect and the mouth of DC is like this on a Sunday.  Some like a hi-vis line it's a little easier to see where your plug is and what it is doing.

Interesting to read about the use of braid and low-stretch lines for steelhead.  Do you guys notice any decline in hookup-to-landing ratio when compared to using straight mono?  I actually prefer the stretch mono provides, as I feel it provides a little forgiveness in keeping a barbless hook in a steelhead's mouth if he decides to run straight at you and cause slack in the line.  But I haven't used braid or low-stretch lines for steelhead before, so I can't say for sure whether my theory holds water.

When you refer to light /heavy John what # are you referring to ?

I'll use anywhere from #16 if I'm plunking in muddy water down to #8 in clear water. Sunline supernatural only. Most of the time I'm using either 10 or 12.

There may be a trade off betweeen mono forgiveness in fighting fish and braid sensitivity in detecting bites. IMO I won't catch any fish if I don't sense the bite and get a hookset on the fish. Braid gives me confidence in detecting bites. I haven't noticed more lost fish with braid, but I do feel like I've lost less gear to structure because I can feel what's going on better and have better control.

Good points John, thanks.  I don't know if I'll ever convert to fishing braid for steelhead.  Maybe I'll give it a try when we have some good runs when I'm not counting a day's bites on one hand.  I completely agree on the sensitivity comment, which is why I've converted most of my outfits to braid.
