Using paddle shaft as handle carrying off balance board
« on: December 06, 2016, 09:48:19 PM »
My board is heavy and the handle is off center, so it's a pain carrying it by the inserted handle.  Want to add loops of cord onto the board so I can use the paddle shaft as a handle. See this thread:
http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,28566.0.html

2 Questions:
1) Is the paddle handle strong/sturdy enough to carry a heavy board in this manner?
My Ron House 12'6" is pretty heavy (over 30#)

2) I have EZ Plugs by Surfco, which has a peel off adhesive backing, but I don't have the 'glue' that it's sometimes supplied with.  What type of "glue" or adhesive can I use to glue the EZ Plug to my board?  Can I use SuperGlue on the board?

The weight isn't an issue for the paddle.  The 17' bullets are in the 35# range and that's how they are carried most of the time - in some crazy wind at that.

Can't help with the glue question

You'd use an epoxy glue in theory. Superglue won't cut it. But I'd suggest that you take the board to a ding repairers and get two leash plugs set in the deck instead. I did this with an unlimited board and it works well. Not cheap, but do you trust those EZ plugs you've stuck on? If they fail you'll end up st the ding repairers anyway  :)

Caulk works really well to glue the EZplugz. Use a waterproof one and rough up the surface first.

I've installed the handle loop setup on another big board since I started that thread.  I'm happy with that setup.  It's a great way to carry a heavy, off-balance board, and I have had no trouble with paddles being damaged from it.

If you use an EZplugz, install it right next to the handle so you can tuck the loop down into the handle when you paddle the board.   I've never caught a toe, or had any trouble with the loop that way.

There are so many different products that are considered "caulks" here, even in the waterproof variety.  The "strongest" caulk I have ever used is 3m 5200, and honestly I would not recommend that for this application.

I had an EZ plug handle on my old 14' Fanatic that worked really well, installed with ordinary epoxy resin.  The key is as Yugi suggests, rough up the surface first.

May not be the answer that you're looking for but maybe helpful.
I wanted to achieve the same and I looked into EZplugz, I think I read
about some reliability issues with it for on a thread here on the zone.

I found this product instead, the NSI Paddle Shaft Holder:

http://www.northshoreinc.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=272&idcategory=99

It was designed exactly for this purpose and it works really well for me.
Didn't have to deal with separate glue solution either, its built-in adhesive is
still going strong after a year. I carry the board like that even loaded with day
trip stuff on it when it weigh probably close to 40LBR.

As for the installation, like it was suggested, rough it up a bit and I used a heat
gun to heat the area and the adhesive just before applying.
in progress...

You can definitely do it that way....my old C4 has two loops for that purpose.
That NSI loop looks good. The NSI glue is superior too. The EZ-plugs come with superglue...I used it....handle came off after about 6 months.... :P

Them NSI velcro pads look nice...

I added EzPlugs and carrying handles on my board quite a while back, soft handles similar to kayak carry handles one on each side just above the rail.. makes it easy to handle the board when loading on/off the car.

Did not like the idea of the peel off tape or the super-glue and had read not such good reports about reliability of the adhesion.
I used G-Flex epoxy adhesive and its holding well... always wonder when it will fail, but I've had very good lock with G-Flex.
