I have the 7'6" Daiwa Ardito spinning rod.  Took it with me to Central America and did well. Catching fish and traveling in the overhead compartment and multiple taxi/buses.

Comes with its own travel case which was easy to carry.

I've had a number of travel rods break as well but I have had excellent results with Okuma Nomads.

Rod tubes work and I have flown many times with them but they are a PITA.

I know other that have had good success with Fox travel rods.

Thanks for all the replies every one, I really appreciate it. I called my airline today and I can check two bags or one bag and one piece of sports equipment up to 90 inches in sum. That means a rod tube that is 56 inches by 6 inches by 6 inches is only 68 inches in sum by their metrics. I think I will buy a rod tube and just stuff it with like 3 rods. I'm going to bring my 9 foot surf rod and Penn spinning reel that I already own for sure. Now I want a bait casting setup for the rivers. I was thinking I could get an Abu Garcia C3 6500 and a 8'6'' or 9 foot fenwick HMX salmon/steelhead rod and use it for Golden Dorado in Argentina and for striped bass when I get home and get a ugly stick tiger stick for $60 for when I go kayaking and just throw the Abu reel on it for dropping baits. Any thoughts on bait casting setups? Any one tried the HMX rods?

What about those cardboard tubes, are those customizable and cheaper than a rod tube, duck tape and end caps? Also a little wider......... oh, pvc has end caps also, many size widths.......:smt006

Rod tubes are easy to make out of any size PVC tubing.

In my experience the real problem with rod tubes are:

1) Oversize luggage ends up somewhere else.  Depending on the airport this is or isn't a big deal.  But when your bags are Here and your tube of expensive rods is WAY OVER THERE bad shit can happen.

2) Once on ground you now have giant thing that won't fit in any car.

3) The TSA.  Even in a tube I've had guides get messed up.  So you need to put each rod in an individual sock at a minimum.  The lower guide on spinning rods in particular is a fn pain in the ass.  Anyways you get all of your babies snuggle up and some a$$hat at the TSA pulls them all out...unwraps everything...can't figure out how to get them back in and carnage ensues.

And if you have a telescoping rod tube, inevitable some TSA dummy tries to compress it one size too small breaking the tips off your favorite rods.  BTDT.  I still use a telescoping tube, but now place duct tape over every hole that is NOT to be used.

Hmmm, I wanted the rod tube because they are lockable and my flight has two layovers, one in El Salvador and one in Peru. I got the highest coverage I could with travel insurance just in case but I would rather never have to deal with an insurance company ever again. I thought about making a tube out of PVC as well but I am worried about theft. Now I am worried they will collapse my travel tube, I didn't even think about that. I was also looking at gun cases over 56 inches long but they are like 200$ and hard to find so it's just a fantasy, but man it would be awesome to have all my rods laid out flat and snug in foam.

Thanks so much every one, based on the information you gave me I've decided to take three two-piece full length rods. I am getting a flambeau bazuka, and at it's minimum size it is 63 inches so TSA cant crush my rod tips by shortening it's lengths and I will pack it with a foam mattress topper from target that costs about 12$ to keep everything from rattling around. Thanks again to all those who helped me make the right decisions. I'm pretty confident that if my gear makes it there without theft or being lost it will make it intact.
