Now my son is off to College, and my wife is more concerned with transients in our neighborhood (fewer eyes watching the house).

So, she gave the go-ahead for me to get a dog.

Yay.

Just putting it out there amongst the brethren:

Looking for a medium to large size dog good for companionship with a deep woof woof and guard genetics.  Wife is allergic to lots of stuff, so shot hair is probly better but not a must.  Puppy is bettter as well.

Thanks

Bushy

Good luck finding the right dog, they are man's best friend.  I recommend the shepherd group, but I just read that you prefer short haired dogs, so never mind.

How about a water dog? A labrador (about 50-65lbs) is always a good companion.  Somebody has to vouch the shedding portion, but I am pretty sure a lab doesn't shed as much as a german shepherd or belgian sheepdog.

Keep in mind that if you go on vaca and not bringing the dog, you have to worry about boarding.  If you want to get a companion, a dog is a good call.  If you just worry about security, monthly alarm subscription is an option (and probably will be cheaper in the long run).

A puppy will grow up with you, so most of the temperaments and habits will be easily known.  However, a nice match with a rescued dog will worth more than you ever known.

Here is a list of AKC medium size dog, but don't limit yourself to the purebred.  I agree wholeheartedly with VK.

Get yourself a short coat border collie. I like them better as guardy dogs than shepherds. They are super sensitive to sound and motion. Sylphrena acts as my hearing dog for this reason.

Congrats on moving to new stage with son in college ;)

We did extensive research on allergies and while labs are not hypoallergenic they often cause less allergies. Puddle and often their mixes are hypoallergenic. Neither are guard dogs. I had 3 dogs, lab is fantastic all around dog and must have since you live close to water ;) - supposedly their ancestors were taken on boats to bring fishing nets back to the boat

Shar pei!

NEVER!   My nephew had one and it bit my sister's face after living in her house for 5 years.  Don't get mad anyone, but I don't trust Chows, pits either.  I'm really looking at Malinois and boxers, always love labs, and have a special place in my heart for 'real' GSD's though they are hairy.

Standard Poodle. My dad had one when I was a young teen, awesome dog, and they love the water. I copied this:
First, ignore the silly show-ring clips. Poodles can be clipped into shorthaired, normal -looking dogs who are a snap to brush. Poodles also have the advantage of being the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds.

Second, Standard Poodles are elegant, energetic athletes who move with a light, springy gait. They excel in advanced obedience competition, where retrieving and jumping skills are required, and in agility (obstacle course) competitions, where they fly over and under and through the obstacles with a strength and grace that is breathtaking to watch.

Even better, a good Standard Poodle is one of the smartest and most trainable of all breeds. He is a "thinking" dog who pays rapt attention to his owner, learns quickly, and responds eagerly to positive training methods. Indeed, Standard Poodles NEED some sort of mental stimulation in order to be happy -- advanced obedience classes (not just basic), agility classes, or challenging games such as hide 'n seek, or fetching a variety of named toys. This intelligent breed cannot simply sit in the backyard and be ignored.

Most Standard Poodles make great watchdogs and some even have mild (and sensible) protective instincts, but this is not an aggressive breed. Their attitude toward people varies from friendly to politely reserved. Early socialization is important to avoid excessive watchfulness or timidity.

With other dogs and cats, Standard Poodles are usually peaceful and accepting.

However, this breed is by no means perfect or low-maintenance. Besides the regular clipping (every 4-6 weeks), they need a good deal of daily exercise. Their energy level varies from moderate to high and they require brisk walks, jogging, swimming, and/or vigorous play sessions to keep them fit, satisfied, and calm indoors.

Standard Poodles also need a lot of daily companionship. They suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety if left alone too much.

I've got a black lab, very smart dogs and awesome family dogs. Most labs I know and had all shed.
How about a Labradoodle?
They don't shed and very easy to train.

The Germans used the Standard Poodle as much or more than the Shepard.  They bite!

I had a Chow, our first dog.  I could NOT leave that dog alone at home by itself.  It would chew through the door to get out and try to find me.  Literally would eat though a wall or door.

Labs shed a lot.  I've had two for hunting birds.  I could fill grocery sacks with brushed out fur several times during shed season.

I've also had German Shorthairs.  Too docile for a guard dog.  I don't think that dog ever barked.

I've now gone to small dog; a pug/chihuahua.  The dog has super hearing, will jump up and bark at the slightest sound, but isn't obnoxious.  Sheds a lot, but it's short fur.  Travels excellent!  I put him in his kennel box and he's good for 4 hours at a stretch on road trips.  At home, I can leave him for up to 10 hours without making a poop mess and longer for pee.  Not especially a kid-friendly dog, the chihuahua part is very skeptical of people that approach him or me.  Protective that way.

Of all the dogs, I'd say the one that alerts me to something outside the house the best is the Chug (Pug-Chihuahua).  Also the easiest to keep and travel with as well as clean up after.  Smart too.  Only plays with his toys, doesn't chew up my stuff.
