My pocket compass fell out of a PFD pocket last trip out so I needed to replace it. Could not be more pleased with the Bruton deck compass I purchased through Amazon for 32 bucks. It came with 4 short bungee cords. I made small mounting points to securely fasten to the high point of the yak. Super easy to read and keep a direct heading with a glance or two. Nice water out of SWN yesterday and the usual fish. I did listen to guys out of OC try for salmon but the only report was one small one hooked but lost behind the boat.

Looks real good Charles.  I have been eyeing that same compassband was wondering how I was going to mount it to my Viking. I want to put it on the tackle pod but looks like there is no need to.

I got one of these for Father's Day.  Sent it back -- It said "South" was "North," as in it pointed that way.   OOPS!

I found another one on Amazon that I preferred, the Ritchie XP-99 Kayaker, which is bigger (a mixed bag), but it too had the exact same North being called South problem, so I sent it back.

Both are nice units.  The Ritchie seems to be better made, has a rotating navigation ring, and can have its base semi-permanently mounted.  That means the base plate gets screwed to the boat deck, and the compass + ring itself can be removed.  Since my Revo has nothing for the bungee clips to attach to, this was the obvious choice.  The Ritchies are USA made and can be sent in for service, unlike the Suunto's or Bruntons.

The bigger size is an obvious help for those of us w/ less than perfect vision, AND the bigger size helps in dim light.  IIRC the Suunto is glow-in-the-dark.  The Ritchie can be rigged w/ a battery-connected LED for night vision.

There are a couple of other decent kayak bungee style units that have slightly different bungee saddles, and they both got decent reviews on Amazon, particularly after I polled for specifics about the saddle dimensions etc.

For the time-being, I am using my old diving wrist top compass w/ rotating directional bezel, and it works quite well.  It too is glow in the dark, and the directional bezel setting is key to quick, easy, and consistent navigation in murky conditions.  Ancient brand is Welite (w/ Finnish capsule), and whoever created this thing doesn't understand that the freakin' numbers are supposed to increase in a clockwise direction.

There is nothing wrong with those compasses. They are direct reading compasses. The problem is user error. Whichever compass you buy, learn to use it correctly.

Krusty: That's a pretty unnecessarily snarky comment that doesn't advance the topic.  Does not apply when they're sold as Northern Hemisphere units.

The fact is that the compass is a USA safety device & while I can easily make the computational adjustment, that defeats the purpose in an emergency situation.

Yes, we're impressed that not only are you capable of "doing the math" in a dire situation, but you're willing to go ahead and buy something non-intuitive just for the fun of it.  It's pretty simple, where I live North is north and that's what I expect of my compass.

Now that I know, when I hear your call for help, I'll be sure to subtract off 180 from whatever you say...or not????

Thx for that solid advice.

Gee whiz, could be advertising failure or it could a lot produced for the Southern Hemisphere.

So, which direction does your compass point ?  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I'm not sure I'm following the argument here but if you look at the first pic I posted and click on it to enlarge you will see the totem pole off Timber Cove. The compass reading is SE, meaning I am NW of TC which is the actual and correct location. Are you saying that the compasses you returned would read the reverse of the one on my post?

Not quite sure of your relative position, but these compasses read the opposite direction as my Suunto compass that I successfully use for geocaching and hiking, and used for this comparison.  So, when I faced N (according to my Suunto & my local knowledge), the dial noted S.  This is a frame of reference issue, so it may have been "right" in one context, but for normal navigation, that doesn't cut it.

These compasses show correct direction. Operator needs to be adviced not to rely on compass wrt. cardinal directions (when this compass points east it will have north on the right, but still will show right direction when you turn), link above summarizes it nicely.

When you were reading this compass, what part of the compass was the mark you were reading from at? In my case, with the compass in front of me (like in the first post above) I read from the mark that is closest to me at what might be called the 6 o'clock position if viewed from above. It's pretty intuitive to me, no math involved.
