Tried with a friend for the first time today.  We went to SWS to avoid the strong NW swell that came in today.  Both of us took Kris's class a few weeks ago.  But it seems like experience makes a big difference.  All the new gear, tangled lines, breathing up, picking the right spot, fogging masks, made for a difficult day for a couple of noobs!  But we still had a good time getting down to 25 or so feet, just weren't in the right spot and our bottom time needs work.

Definitely have a lot to learn!  How long did it take you guys to "figure it out" and feel comfortable / shoot your first fish?

The second try you will feel like you have been diving for years.  Ok probably not that quick but hang in there it gets easier each time.  As long as you are having fun the fish will come later.

a toothpaste with silica as an ingredient came so clutch for helping to relieve my fog issues. If you can learn to dive this year, with these conditions, everything else will be a breeze. As a surfer being in the water wasnt a problem, but getting comfortable with my gear was where my diving started to get a lot better. Practice makes perfect

go again a second and third time as soon as you can. i feel like when i've been dry a while, it takes a bit to feel at home in the sea again. or pick a golden day - bound to be some soon

Thanks for the encouragement guys!  Plan is to get up north of the golden gate in August, so that will be the next practice session.

I've tried the toothpaste before as a kid, but I was hoping there was something more high tech being 2016 and all... sounds like toothpaste is still the way to go.

Has anyone ever tried to spearfish in HMB on a calm day?  Occasionally I have been out there to the first green can and it's pretty flat.  There's a couple spots where the reef gets up to 15 feet of the surface, was wondering if it would be worth diving for something like uni or maybe RF if lucky.

The boat traffic anywhere near a 'can' would seam quite unsafe for diving ... Maybe illegal too?

That is a common feeling on first attempts. All the suggestions are good ones just keep going it just takes the right day. There will come a day with little or no swell no wind and visibility will be like Hawaii "well our coast not so much" but you get my drift it will be a super day and you'll be hooting and hollering after you come on shore what a killer dive you just had.  Your bottom time will be better that you ever had because you'll be in water that is just so calm. This has all kinds of benefits the calmer you are your heart rate will slow so oxygen is conserved longer down time. Its all good.

Keep particing your skills and be patient. Get comfortable diving without your gun, float line etc. Then add them to the mix.

Sounds good gents.  Yeah I agree it's a bad idea to dive next to that can... especially since I purposely added a big orange flag to my yak just because of the traffic cutting across the reef!  Too many crazies out there.  Thank you for reminding me not to die  :smt005:

Cabeza, have u gone spearing since Kris's class?  Any chance you would let me tag along sometime if you go?  It's hard for me to get time away from mom and baby, but I would value the chance to learn from someone with experience.  Let me know if you need a partner.

hey one more small suggestion- you might try just taking a pole spear the first few times. a lot of guys get any fish they're after with a pole spear, but more importantly, they're super simple and intuitive. no re-loading, no shooting line getting tangled and you can even take a second shot underwater if  you miss with your first. good luck, dive safe!
