this was really helpful...thank you for the photos.  now that you have been using the Scotty DR do you prefer the cup holder mount or the rail mount?

How did you move the pulley from the tip of the boom to the middle of the boom?  If the cable runs over the edge of the cable reel when the pulley is in the middle of the boom, you can get the pulley to feed the cable into the middle of the cable reel by bending the boom upwards.  But the boom is pretty stiff, so don't clamp down the downrigger base and try to bend the boom.  You'll probably break the boom out of the plastic base if you do that.  Instead, clamp down the boom next to the base and then bend the rest of the boom up, so you don't place any stress on the plastic base while bending the boom.

I have one of those little DR's and use a scotty mount for it, with a steel backing plate inside my hull for it, to help disperse the dragging forces it has.   How is your hull holding up to that drag force being on such a skinny mount?

I use a Laketroll DR on my hobie as well. Mounted using standard Scotty mount with large washers instead of back plate. I changed wire to 150lb braid to eliminate hum and use a 4lb ball. Everything seems solid after 6 months of use.

Looks good. I've been using one on a rail for the last 1.5 yrs with a 4lb ball. I second the thought of ditching the steel wire and getting braid. I use metered braid (color coded for depth) in 65 lb with a rubber snubber before my weight. The braid cuts the water easier and you can cut it in an emergency which is very important.
