What a beautiful little lake to paddle around! Nice drive as well.

Never fished there before, so I drove up today about 4pm itching to try out the stuff from my mystery tackle box. Found a nice little fallen tree South of the launch and pulled out bluegill for about a half hour solid.

Then I headed North and fished a football weed less jig with a lizard trailer and got a couple huge take downs, which I miraculously missed... So at the end of the evening I switch it up to a small top water popper and pulled in a few smaller bass.

Not really a great report, but a great day, and an awesome place to kayak! I guess there are some big bass in there, so I'll definitely be putting some more time on there.

Does anyone here fish there?

Well the take downs got you excited, I bet.  We have had several HOW events there.  I can say that I have never caught anything.  Not even the bluegill you speak of.  However, several of the volunteers and ROB seem to
catch both trout and bass.  I have seen one guy in a small aluminum boat that trolls by the dam and gets trout.  They are usually about 25-30 feet down.  It is a very nice lake to paddle or peddle.

To whomever works there: I'm uh... Gonna need a key to that gate!  :smt044

In all seriousness it was a great place to fish, or even just hang out for the day. Kept it simple and only took the popper in addition to July's mystery tackle box. I've never (never, in 26 years) caught a fish on a jig. Just never put enough time into them I suppose. However, those two takedowns were (felt at least) like nice fish! I'm going to have to put some more time in with the jig for sure.

Cowman, no lie, bluegill and crappie are two of my favorites! In Kentucky at the game reserve by my house you can catch a bluegill or crappie every cast with a small grub! So much fight in the bluegill they're a blast on an ultra light. Actually today the first bass I caught, now that I think about it, was on a 1/16th grub and 5'6" ultra light! I thought "this must be the biggest bluegill on the planet!" Pops always told me if there was a 15 pound bluegill, you'd never be able to get it to the boat  :smt044

I've been bass fishing in there somewhat regularly for the past three years.  It's a fantastic lake for bass fishing.  Tons of fish in the two pound range in there and they're generally willing to eat no matter the time of year.  There are also some big fish in there.  The "ranger" that works there has told me he has numerous 10lb plus fish from the lake and I believe he said his personal best was around 15lbs.  It definitely has everything needed to produce giants!  The cover, depth, forage, etc are all there for producing bass of epic proportions.

My oldest son Evan and I have had many days where we landed between 75 and 100 bass there.

I have seen pics of 10-13lbs. I also saw a 5.5 Smallmouth there. 19" crappie too. No lie!

I believe you about the giants, it definitely has that feel. Headed out there when the gate opened today armed with an ultra light setup and a grub looking for crappie. Wound up getting into the bluegill again! The one I measured went right at 11 inches and she was a fatty! So much fun on the ultra light.

I'm just going to have to put more time in there and see what the bass are eating.

I didn't even realize there were smallmouth in there.  I would have thought I'd have caught one by now.  I finally did land one at Clear Lake the other night so I know those aren't rumors anymore!  :smt003

I really wish I could get into Hennessey at night!!  You can bank fish there after the sun goes down but all boats have to be off the water!  :smt010

I can't wait to figure out where the crappie are in there, 17 inches is a huge fish!

Sucks about the nighttime fishing, but on the plus side I like the lack of powerboats and jet skis. So I guess it has it's pros and cons like everything else. I guess there's another little spot on the north side where you can launch. Buddy at work just told me about it, going to have to do some research. I would gladly stop by the launch and donate $5 if I could then leave and launch somewhere closer to where I wanted to fish.

Do you have a pic of the SMB from CL? I need to see it to believe it.

The 5.5 was caught 100yds from the ramp on a hump. Now I really burned it.

Its posted on the North side that launching is only allowed at the launch. Pretty lame since there is some great fishing on the north. I cant believe they expect kayakers to paddle across the lake to get there. Also as an FYI for everyone, the new launch time is 7AM. I arrived at 6AM yesterday morning along with several others to see that the hours were changed.
