Troopers: Missing kayaker is active-duty JBER airman

Alaska State Troopers say the missing kayaker believed to have drowned in Eklutna Lake was a 20-year-old active duty airman from Texas.

Troopers say search efforts to find Robert Brown, who was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, are continuing. Troopers will be flying to the lake Thursday, according to an online dispatch.

Brown's family has been told about the incident.

The area Brown where was reported missing was near the Anchorage municipal water supply intake, the dispatch says. Due to the proximity to the intake, the Anchorage Fire Department did not deploy divers because of strong water currents posing a safety risk.

Brown was reported missing around 4:50 p.m. Monday. Troopers report his kayak overturned in the waters of the popular recreational lake, 30 miles north of Anchorage.

Chugiak Fire Department immediately responded to the lake and then requested help from AFD's dive team, according to Anchorage Deputy Fire Chief Jodie Hettrick.

Searchers spent Monday pinpointing the general location of where Brown overturned and whether they could safely dive. Search efforts shifted to a body recovery later that evening, Hettrick said.
