Help! Broken leash again. Help big wave or super strong leash
« on: February 11, 2016, 02:05:27 PM »
Maybe 2' overhead set catches me inside and my leash broke.   I surfing a rock river mouth.  Because of the leash, my board smashed into the rocky shoreline and I broke off two fins and have some areas to fix. Last time this happened, my 10"SUP got two 6"x30" gashes in the bottom. Pain in the ass to repair.

This is the 4th HD leash I have broken in 3 years or so.  All have broken at the rubber extension where the leash is connected to the ankle strap..  years ago, I used to have huge brass swivels connecting the ankle strap to the cord and at the board, and they always broke in the cord, not where it connects to the ankle strap.

Any and all advice is welcome.. I am bummed and kind of upset that the leash companies cant make a good product.

All I use now are the Stay Covered XXL's. 9.5 mm thick.  I think I learned that from someone on here last year.

If you want a lot stronger leash you have to make everythinh stronger. Thicker rope, better connections. Better cuff. Longer line. Every component or you just move the failurr point. I know guys who keep the same leash for years and wig out when they break. I consider three months the max if it never gets stretched. Stretch i once and its junk.

I have been making my own leashes for 3 years.  Replaced all the terminal tackle with my own designs.

White plastic thimble, stainless steel S hook, and hog clip to secure on the back side of the thimble.

You can get this stuff at McMasterCarr.

I never had one of these break until a month ago.  That leash lasted 2 1/2 years and broke in the middle.  This terminal design may wobble but if you watch for necking, and replace the poly regularly, it will not fall over.

Someone told me to quit wrapping my leash around my board and fin when I'm done surfing. He said that puts nics in the leash and that's where they break.  I've been removing the leash after I surf and have not had a broken leash for a while. Not sure if it is coincidence or not, but easy to do.

Agree with you Tom. I never wrap my leash around my board and I always remove after and reattach before each session.   I also rinse it off after each session.
Of course in the Caribbean it doesn't matter how well you take care of your leash.  I've had brand new leashes that I had stored away for a couple of months that broke in their first session due to " dry rot".

The tropics eat plastic. It's not just the UV, I've had things disintegrate in a few month while stored in a dark closet. The plastic housing on my garage door opener breaks like a soda cracker--it's never been exposed to direct sunlight. But add in blasting UV and everything goes that much quicker.

That's a pretty standard 5/16 (8mm) leash, Toolate. The Stay Covered 9.5 mm hand tied leashes are pretty bomber. They don't have a strain relief thimble like Beashos do, but they're good if you don't want to make your own. I'd be looking for a covered thimble Beasho. That open ferrule can pop out pretty easy.

Couldn't prove it by any of the available specs. From what I can see it looks like the railsaver end might be hand tied, but it's not clear, and the cuff side looks like a standard formed welded attachment. I'm not familiar with the brand but I can't see anything in the link you provided that says it's special. 5/16 is fairly stout, but 3/8" is more like it for larger volume boards. I'm slowly switching to hand tied for everything. Most failures I see happen at the junctions. I test all my old leashes to destruction

some great input...  Its the cuff side welded part that breaks on me every time... I want to get away from that welded part and tie a swivel the ankle cuff.  Whats the best way to tie off the cord when you double it over?  I see some have huge staples. but I am thinking of using nylon cord and epoxy.

Beasho, beautiful.

I've seen thinner cords tied off with thin nylon quite successfully, but those were for surfboards.  For a thicker sup cord it might be difficult.

For those of us not clever enough to fabricate our own, what Tuna said, hand tied 7/6 " cords in various lengths http://www.staycovered.com/#!product/prd1/1309112931/12'-xxl-big-wave

What exactly does "hand tied" mean?  What is it that's being "tied"?
