Tournament Rules
Members shall not cheat or be dishonest. Any angler breaking the following rules will be disqualified.
Members will use artificial baits only--live or cut bait is not allowed.
Members are restricted to using one rod and reel at a time. Anglers may not have more than one line in the water at a time.
Only one person per kayak or approved fishing vessel is allowed.
All fishing regulations under DFG and boating regulations under USGC apply. A current California fishing license must be in possession during the tournament.
Kayak or approved vessel must be propelled by paddle or peddle drive system, no gas or electric motors.
US Coast Guard approved PFD must be worn at all times while in the kayak or approved fishing vessel.
Anglers must cast, catch, and land their fish from the kayak or approved fishing vessel while floating (example: anglers may not fish from a beached kayak).
Members must not go more than 100 yards past the launch location prior to the start of the competition. No fishing during the waiting period.
Members must stay within the tournament boundaries during the tournament.
Members must be within 100 yards of the launch site by the check-in time, no fishing allowed after the check-in time.
A penalty of 1 inch per minute late will be applied to the angler’s score. The member is disqualified after 15 minutes past the check-in time.
Catch Photo Release (CPR)
Members will only use Catch Photo Release as means of fish measurement.
Fish must be at least 12 inches in length, or the minimum legal length for that species and that body of water.
Accepted species are largemouth bass, spotted bass, and smallmouth bass.
Fish must be caught, landed, and handled consistent with DFG regulations and released alive and in good condition immediately after the photos have been taken.
The measuring device must be an approved “Hawg Trough,” white or yellow, one piece (no hinges), with one quarter inch markings must be clearly visible (darkened with paint or pen if needed), and be at least 24 inches in length. Fish exceeding the length of the measuring device will be awarded the maximum length of the measuring device (no estimations or extensions allowed).
The picture must show:
Mouth must be fully closed. One inch will be deducted from a fish pictured with an open mouth.
Fish is laying on side, dorsal fin up, with mouth touching the left side of board.
No obstructions in the nose or tail of the fish.
Measurements need to be rounded down to the ¼” mark unless the tail is clearly touching the line.
Only one hand may be used to hold fish on the board: no ties, bungee cords, bands, etc.
Fish should not be pictured while hooked by any fishing device such as: a fish grip, game clip, lure, hook, or bait.
The unique identifier code for the competition will be drawn from a deck of cards the morning of the tournament prior to launch. The identifier, measuring device, and the full length of the fish must be clearly visible for the catch to count towards the score.
Members will be responsible for submitting their own photo catches using a camera with a viewable screen.
Members will be responsible to report accurate length of their fish.
Each member’s top three longest fish will be scored.
The angler with the highest total inches for three fish is the winner. In case of a tie, the anglers’ biggest fish will break the tie, or second biggest if the first is tied also.
Miscellaneous
The cut-off time and date for any changes to the tournament will be as follows: the tournament directors must notify the competitors no later than 8:00PM on the date two days preceding the tournament date if any changes need to be made.
The tournament directors will establish the tournament details concerning weigh-in, big fish rules, off-limit rules and other details of each tournament at the club meeting prior to each tournament and announced to the membership at that time.
Some tournaments or Fish-n-Chills, as determined by a vote of the members may also be designated as “technique-specific”, such as jigs only, frogs only, etc.
Tournament results will be posted after the tournament, and the top anglers will act as mentors for the group, providing insight into their winning methods and techniques, and their approach to the day.

Hey guys, I fished one of these last year and it was a fun well run event. Thanks for the clear and easy to understand format/ rules. I have a couple questions:

Will the start times be standardized through the series. Example- 1/2 before sunrise etc? Since you guys do fish your own events will you have a start time cutoff and will that also be standardized.

Payout: is this a 100% payout event? I remember from the event I attended I think $5 of my entry went to biggest fish and the rest was split 20/30/50. I like that format!

Will you have a raffle? If so will any of those funds go to a charity?

Will there be a TOC for qualified anglers?

Thanks and I look foward to fishing some of these events.

Start and end times will vary depending on sunrise. We try and go at first light or what the directors feel is safe for our anglers. Since we are using areas that are frequently used by bass boat bulbs we want safety to be our biggest concern. Flyers will be made and posted with start times for each event. This will have start time and end time of 6-8 hours. Tournament directors come in early to help with check in but we gladly do it.

Our events are 100% payout up to the max of $1000 per event per dfg rules and regs. All money over $1000 goes into the club for end of year party and free raffles at the last tournament. We will also be providing lunch/dinner on our last tournament to say thank you along with our free raffle event.

We are not doing a toc thus year. We are only in our second year of running tournaments and decided small changes were best for our already active anglers. We are doing a aoty thus year. $20 entry based on 100 point system per tournament. First gets 100 second gets 99 and so on. If you cannot make an even you will be given the lowest #that is given for anyone who enters and has a no fish day. All money from aoty goes into a gift card to a local custom rod builder who will build you what ever you want in the gift card price range. If we get 30 anglers in aoty @ $20 each that's $600 in custom rods to the winner of aoty.  Toc may come next year we don't want to change to many things all at once and not be able to deliver for our anglers. We are a club and as a club we run the events so it's supposed to be fun alwith the chance to win a little money.

Prize payout if we have max payout is 40/30/20 and 10% big fish. It's done this way to be used in our computer program we have designed for score tracking. After 2 judges verify all photos for accuracy we input the scores for each angler. It then gives us all anglers in order orlf first -last big fish and prize money. That way there is no errors.

With us being a club we are only running club level events. Our payouts will only be $1000 total per evebt. Our aoty will be awarded after all tournaments are done. BBQ and free raffle will come after all events and is just a thank you to our anglers. Each angler will be given a ticket for every evebt that fish and free prize raffle will be done this way. We are not taking donations to be given to a charity this year we want to make sure we can provide the best fishing experience for our anglers and it's in the works for next year. We have tripled our number of events this year from 2015 and want to make sure everything runs smoothly from there.

Any other questions I can answer for anyone?

Got my calendar marked! Thanks for the post James! Anyone else on NCKA that loves to bass fish should enter these tourneys. Fun competition and great group of guys who put it together.

Makes sense, thanks for the clarification James. You mentioned club only events. I don't think I signed up or joined any club last year, would an angler need to do this to participate and what does it intail? I know my name was added to a list for that particular event, believe the YakABass Facebook page.

At the event I fished there was a limited amount of anglers who could participate. I also noticed that a bunch of guys who signed up didn't show for the event I attended. This could potentially leave a lot of guys out who maybe wanted to fish the event but couldn't get on the list. Do you guys plan to take prepaid registration to possibly deter this and keep payouts at max?

I understand how much work these events are and I appreciate you taking the time.

In 2016 there are no club dues so all is welcome. We will not be doing sign ups this year since it was such a problem with facebook/ncka rules and such so this year it will be first 50 anglers to show up and pay there entry. We had 29 guys at our last event and hopefully we will push 40 anglers this year at our events. The tournament directors will give up our spots if it comes down to it to let guys fish for the money. Last year we tried to make it so we would stop at $1000 total payback is why we had an angler cap but this year since all extra money will go back to a big BBQ and prize list at the end of the year as long as we're under our 50 angler limit for dfg were good to go. In 2017 we will probably go to a membership program for the club to help pay for events instead of having to take money from entries to pay for the plaques and tournament fees to put on the event. Plus having monthly get together to discuss what is going on with fishing and bringing in speakers and such like the bass boat clubs do. It's all in the works that's why we ate only doing small changes for 2016 so guys can up there skill levels and bring more new guys into the tournament game and increase the level of our anglers. I'm working on donations for the end of the year party now and will have a list of all sponsors when they start coming through. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the water it's going to be a good year.

Scoring I haven't brought this up. Our events are total inches for 3 fish. Ties are broken by largest fish caught between those who are tied. At the end of the tournament we will have a table where anglers must check in show there photos to 2 judges who will record the fish lengths. Mouths must be closed with identifier in the picture and tails must cross the line. Judges have the final call but touching the line will not count. There will be deductions for mouths open and no disqualified fish unless found to be cheating. Artificial lures only no live bait and no motors or sails allowed unless a disability keeps our anglers from paddling and must notify tournament staff prior to the tournament to check with us first. We're trying to keep everything fair and keep as many anglers happy as possible while continuing to grow kayak bass fishing in norcal

This is going to be so much fun.  Going from standing on the deck of a 21 ft bass boat to a turbo powered Hobie PA 14.  Hope I can handle 4 mph.

I will try and make at least one event this year.  Any updates on the permits for the fish n chill launches or did you update that info on the facebook page?  Is it March yet?

Had a blast fishing with a group of YAB anglers yesterday out of Paradise Point.  I wish the fish would have been more cooperative for everyone but that will happen as the water warms up more.  Looking forward to the March event!!!  Hope to see a large NCKA contingent there!

It isn't too bad.  The hardest part for me was having to adapt to not being able to drive across the lake/delta to another "more productive" area.  Plus having to paddle 30 to 60% of my day, reducing the number of casts I would make in a day was too much for me to handle, so this year I'm upgrading to a Hobie PA 14 giving me the freedom to cast while moving to a new spot.  We'll see if that helps.
