Custom surf sups?
« on: February 12, 2016, 08:48:04 PM »
Ok after a big time swell on Monday I discovered my 8'10" Hobie CM Raw has a couple of leaks, one by the handle the other under the deck pad where I usually have my back foot.  The board is 5 years old and has been through a lot and has been a very good companion. I love the shape, how fast it is and how well it surfs.  The newer CM Raws are crap compared to the older models from what I have seen..fragile and poorly made.

Has anyone ever used a custom shaper to copy a board they have loved?   If I have the specs to the shape, can they come close to duplicating the board? How do custom prices compare to something off the rack?  I am currently in south Florida for the winter, so if anyone can recommend a shaper ....thanks in advance.

I'm stoked to see people talking custom shapes. If had had the money for new boards, I think that would be the only way I'd go. I'm a new SUP'er, (coming from a lifetime of surfing) and luckily landed a custom used board for my first board, with a good stringer (kind of a necessity where I surf, I can tell.) Whatever board I've ever been on, I've always thought of how to slightly improve it. If exact same dimensions, then mess with the foil. Hope I hear more about your search. For my next, I'd either go with just plain bigger, like 100 L for choppier days, or pulled-in tail, similar volume for barrels. Then a gun for big Popotla and Todos!

I know that mrbig has had a custom made by Ed Angulo (living the golf life in Fla).... and it was glassed in Corevac at Cannibal....so it is light and tough.

Skip Smith make some nice boards in Jacksonville.

and..... with hesitation..... Watersedge used to make boards for Hobie... and they may have that board in their CNC..... but then again, their website is down, so may be gone. Their build quality was suspect, mine had issues when they first came out

I had a custom made by Dave Daum (Kings) and he will actually work with you via online desktop sharing so you can provide the exact specs of the board.... Then boom you get the exact dimensions you want !! I'll never go back to anything other than custom now !!

Mr Big has 3 Kings that are custom plus that Angulo .... The guys a custom maniac!

Ed's definitely got the mojo. Mixing that with the corevac has always interested me. You could also get the board scanned then tweak it if you think it needs it and get it CNC cut and glassed.

Ask Hobie to build you a board using their older layup.

There is more to board design than just knowing a rocker elevation. How it gets from point A to point B is equally important.

You won't get the same board from somebody else.

Customs are great but you'll never be able to duplicate a board that was shaped by someone else. It'll be close in some instances but when someone wants a duplicate that someone else shaped I always ask what would you like this board to do a little differently. That way they get something that will be slightly different and not expect the same exact board. 99% of the time they like the modified board better than the original.

Exactly right...it's Mark Johnson's IP...and, I'm sure that Mark has the exact shaping file from that board design from five years ago and can have it CNC machine cut...Hobie can glass the board with a more robust build than the production version...

We've just recently done exactly the same thing for three clients riding my production designs from five years ago...they wanted exactly the same boards again with customized graphics and our lighter, stronger, and greener builds...

Thanks...Great suggestions all, from Ed Angulo to Dave Daum, right back to Hobie.  Hobie makes sense, but if they could still make this same board why don't they?  The quality of their CM Raws has dropped considerably from my model and I would hate one of their newer ones.  But might worth an e-mail to ask…

Yep. If you want another Hobie call them up! Even if it was scanned the final shaping would lead to a different board.

Although I heard through the grapevine Mark is much less involved on the shaping side of the business than he used to be.

The Hobies that were glassed in FL after their glass shop was shut down for a while due to some sales of controlled substances by employees - NOT by Hobie - were horrible..

After 5 years  you  might  want  to  try  something  new  and  different .  Just  a  suggestion , but  maybe  you  can  get  your  raw refurbished  and  get  a  custom  too.

I gotta say, repairs are worth it on a daily driver. Then maybe try another board with the extra money. Should be easy to find someone to lay a new deck on that in FL. They do it for longboard delams all the time.

Ironically, adding weight or effing up the flex to a "magic" board is usually the surest way to inadvertently kill the magic in a special surfing board...let alone hiring a shaper/designer to knockoff a shape...;-)

The inherent special attributes of a board...deck & bottom rocker/planform/volume distribution/bottom contours...etc..the IP "special sauce" are way more important and have way more on the overall effect on the performance of a recreation/duplicate of any board than what any competent scrubber/ finish shaper/ glasser/ sander could have on a deleterious change in the performance or feel of the original shape...especially, since we are able to get the CNC machine cuts to within 99% of the finished shape now...
