Had wallet and laptop stolen while out surfing at tourmaline in San Diego this am.  Spent the day canceling credit cards and shoring up that end of my operation. I am from Rhode Island. I have no ID and no credit cards and no way to get an ID although credit cards are coming tomorrow. I lost my birth certificate years ago. Ditto Social Security card. Cannot get new drivers license Without above.  Can't get birth certificate without notary: can't get notary without ID. Catch 22. Thieves now have my Social Security number, along with 15 years  Worth of my life. Identity theft about to occur, I am sure. In the meantime, I have ceased to exist. And I don't know what to do. Anyone have any suggestions?

File police report immediately. Starts paper trail/proof for future possibility of ID theft.

Contact credit agencies ASAP, check credit reports for discrepancies, for example w/ Experian you can file a 90 day credit security/fraud alert. Go to their site online and they have information regarding stolen wallet/information/protecting your identity.

Call these numbers and ask for the fraud department:

Equifax – 1-800-525-6285
TransUnion – 1-800-680-7289
Experian – 1-888-397-3742


Maybe consider Costco or other identity protection? They have a site with lots of info too. it's approx $10/mo.

Do you have a passport? Should suffice to get a DL and such.

Future.... don't ever carry SS card in your wallet.

Great suggestions, all, and I have taken most of them.  May have a lead on a somewhat flexible notary (thanks, David!).

On the plus side, when they broke into my truck, they didn't steal my littly fluffy dog Lily.  I'm sure she slept through the whole thing, if only because she's deaf and was probably sound asleep.  not exactly a threatening dog, either.  and, they didn't take my iphone.

i'm going to return to tourmo this morning and see if any of the early arrivals saw anything yesterday early on.  not that it'll do any good at this point, but you never know.  plus, the waves are supposed to be better today.

what a pain in the ass this hiccup in life is causing.  the laptop theft especially.  i had it backed up (with the back up at home in RI, which I will get sent to me), but I had lots of sensitive info unsecurely  stored in it.  lots.  crap.

Call the RI State Troopers.  All 4 of 'em!
