TOPIC: Kayak bow lines

Kayak bow lines 2 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 7
Hi all

Ive been trying to find out why some people have got short lengths of webbing attached to the bow and or stern of there boats? or rope in some cases?

Is it just to make the chances of a rescue easier than grabbing a handle?

I cant find any pictures to post for an example but im sure someone must know what im talking about?

Any help appreciated?

I wouldn't do it. If you have metal grab handles, they will be much better, because you can get on a carabiner with 1 hand. I see it as a possible snagging hazard on a strainer. If it is like sea kayak deck lines where it lays flat on the boat, that should not be a problem though.

A length of clean tape on the stern is handy for rescuing swimmers. They have something easy to grab without trying to clamber onto your back deck looking for a grab handle - thus making your boat go vertical and making the pull to the bank an awful lot harder.... So long as there are no knots and is isn't overly long it shouldn't present a snagging danger.

Another thought....if a nervous swimmer manages to jam their hand into your metal grab handle and your boat suddenly flips, you're liable to damage the swimmer's wrist or fingers. So tape is safer to hold on to.
