Yesterday we paddled the Witte River. It was the first time creeking for 7 months and 2 days for me. I decided to try Fluid's Big Bang. The boat performed really well and I had a great time, even if I was a little rusty...
First up is Pilkington Falls and Stefano did the left line backwards, landing on the rock and crushing the stern of his kayaking and breaking some outfitting from the roughly 4.5m drop. Luckily he wasn't injured.
I messed up the dodgy rapid below Pilkington Falls and the stern got pinned in the bottom for a bit, right above the first siphon. It felt a lot longer than the video I can assure you :) It probably looks quite tame in fact, but swimming is not an option. More nastiness awaits below and another siphon below Ant (pink boat at the end) which you might spot. As I got out and headed for the gap (the only line) next to the siphon, Stefano came from the back, hitting me and almost broached me across the gap... He then went down the left, which resulted in him being pinned but came out easily enough. Close call. Shortly after this another member of our group went straight through a siphon, boat and all. It makes one wonder sometimes about a lot of things. It was one of the more unpleasant places I've been, and vow not to make the same mistake again, although one does get pushed left into that undercut after the first drop. That rapid has always scared me, and always will. Keep safe, keep paddling!
Apologies for the misty footage. My GoPro keeps doing that after a short while. Silica balls don't seem to help :( Ideas?
